Cost of road tax these/those days!

I spotted a tax disc on 1926 Bentley. It cost £16.
In today's money, that's basically £2000 in todays money.

So really road tax is getting cheaper.

And in those days wasn't it actually "road tax" that went to the maintenance and upkeep of roads? I have a feeling this was the case until 1937 (or somewhen)
