My partner & I need to renew our breakdown cover, and it seems the RAC (who we're currently with and have just dropped a nigh on doubling of the premium, despite no call outs) are about the only company I can find who will provide personal cover (important as we own quite a few cars) on any age of vehicle. Most providers I've looked at have an age limit of between 16-25 years as a maximum.

EU cover ideal, but not essential as I can buy a standalone policy when I go (usually in a car that's either sub five years or ten years old, I won't take the 43 year old Metro!).

Any suggestions?

Does the AA have an age limit on the car?

The AA T & C I've seen say:

If you have Personal cover (for you, for two
people or Family cover), the people named on
your policy are covered as drivers or
passengers in any vehicle

Just had a look at their T&C's and they don't specifically exclude older vehicles, unfortunately their price isn't especially competitive.

Well, it is when you discover you get a significant discount via the IAM! I think we have a winner...

Cheers for that Mr 2SB!

Cheers.

Also, you'll generally get a better price if you ring up rather than online.

Auto Aid appear to have a £25 excess for cars over 10 years old with no upper age limit.

Just one thing.

The T & C do say that the car needs a valid MOT. Might be worth checking that's not a back door way of excluding MOT exempt cars! (I doubt it is, but worth checking).

Autoaid. Arranged recovery for our Austin 7 last weekend. bow

£25 excess for old cars each time you call them out but way cheaper than the anything else I've found. Offer personal cover for any vehicle and were very helpful on the phone.

Auto Aid Breakdown charge me £76.99 for two cars. (One over 13 and one over 17) There is a callout fee if I ever need them. Worth a look.

The exact wording is critical. When I looked a few years ago for RAC it said something like "The vehicle must have an MOT if legally required". I had a head gasket fail on my kitcar (Historic vehicle staus) and the call centre asked about MOT staus - I replied it is Historic Vehicle so MOT isn't required; this was accepted, and RAC attended.

I've always struggled with this, particularly cover in Europe & repatriation etc

I found the cover I wanted as part of my classic insurance.

When I enquired with another provider (I don't recall which) for cover on our cars including a kit car which is registered as new 2009, I was told they would not cover because of the age-related registration (Ereg prefix).

To be fair, it's hard to see how they couldn't charge a bit more than the usual suspects if they send out an articulated lorry every time they came to rescue you in a car the size of a Mini.

Unfortunately AutoAid won’t cover my partner & I under one policy as we’re not married!

The AA so far are winning - sub £100 with IAM discount for home start & relay, for the both of us in any vehicle.
