Im not new to leasing and we have previously taken out leases in my husbands name and I've been the main driver. Now we've arranged a lease in my name and my daughter would be the main driver. There was an option to take out the finance in her name but a soft search showed it would probably be declined as she has no credit history, so the finance was taken out in my name. I was advised by Stoneacre that I would have to be the main driver on the insurance and her as a named driver. So now we are looking at the insurance and as I already use my no claims on my own car the insurance is approx £1500 but I'm also aware that this is "fronting" and not legal. Other than cancel the order or try and get the finance in my daughters name can anyone make any other suggestion ?

TIA Kelly x

I don't think Stoneacres advice is correct. I'd check with them and the insurance company. The insurance company want to know who the registered keeper of the car is......and/or if it's leased, but otherwise they want to know who the real main driver so the car can be insured appropriately.

Yes thats what I thought. But I read all the docs for the lease and it actually specifies that I (as the leaser) have to be the main driver of the vehicle on the insurance

I can understand that they require you to be named on the insurance policy as you have a financial responsibility for the car. Requiring you to be the main driver makes no sense, if you aren't, as it would be deemed 'fronting' by the insurance company and could jeopardise any future claim.

I definitely wouldn't risk fronting. Insurance companies are incredibly good at spotting it now, and if your daughter has an accident, they just won't pay out. I had a friend who tried this and ended up with a cancelled policy on their record, which made future insurance almost impossible to get. It’s better to just pay the high premium or find a cheaper car.

This is wrong. You would have to be the policyholder, and your daughter would be the named driver, and also disclosed as the main driver. The premium will be rated on her risk profile, even though you are the policyholder.

It could be correct - it might simply be a requirement of either Stoneacre or their funder and they can set whatever rules they like.

I was thinking just simply do what suits and don't tell them, but it's possible they might have some sort of access to check.

No it couldn't be correct. Stoneacre are a car dealership. They are telling their customer to lie to their insurers, by saying the OP is the main driver when she is not, the 19 y/o daughter is. That cannot be their rules.

There's 2 possible reason why they've told the OP to do this.
1. They are idiots, and genuinely don't understand anything about insurance.
2. They are not idiots, and they know if the OP tells the insurer the truth, the premium will be thru the roof compared to the OP being the main user, and they're worried that the OP will have 2nd thoughts and they'll lose a sale.

I'm going to be generous to them and guess it's 1.

I read it that it's a condition of the lease that the OP is the main driver ie, basically what they're saying is that she can't lease it on behalf of someone else. Their way of enforcing this is by insisting the person talking the lease is the main driver on the insurance.
.

ETA: I just looked back through the thread and saw this post from the OP:

I cancelled the order this morning.

We have now gone down the PCP route for a 73plate low mileage Audi A1. Her own insurance, keeps her no claims discount & the insurance is half the price.

Thanks everyone

Has this issue never come up when your husband leased cars with you as main driver - ie, is it unique to Stoneacre or the funder they've used in this instance?

ETA: A quick Google suggests it's absolutely standard that whoever's name is on the lease contract must be the main driver. I imagine that must get ignored a lot between husband and wife.
