My wife picked my up tonight in her car. A Suzuki Ignis. On the way home she was in 4th gear under 20mph with the engine clearly labouring. Is there a correct way of pointing this out without getting my head snapped off?

Probably not. Has it got one those ‘suggested gear’ indicators on the dash?
Hedge your bets by telling her when you’re within walking distance from home.

Start with (tomorrow)

“Hey I thought i heard a funny noise from the car - thanks for picking me up - can I take it for a spin to see if I can hear the noise again?”

Will at least add some delay…

Try " I heard from <insert source>"

10 = 1st gear
20 = 2nd gear
30 = 3rd gear
40 = 4th gear
50 and above etc etc

Obvs depends on the gearbox of the car, but might help ? Otherwise....God Speed biggrin

Tell her plain and simple that her driving style/gear selection will one day kill the engine.

Being a Suzuki it might be 10 years and 3 owners down the line before it happens, depending on the age/mileage of the car in question.

I ve threatened my good lady with an automatic for abusing her manual car in a similar manner.

Even in a previous PD TDI engined VAG vehicle that shuddered like crazy when in too low revs, she still didn t cotton on that the engine was not happy. 17 years and counting.

"Darling - You're such a great driver and much better than I am, I used to keep my car at 20 mph in 4th which my very attractive female driving instructor told me was the right way to drive, she was brilliant and did I tell you we're friends on Insta? - she keep posting these bikini shots and always asks me to give a like".

I go with "4th gear must be pretty much bedded in by now". No point pissing about.

You are sunk, the only way it could be worse is if you gave some white goods for the kitchen as her Xmas pressie.

You need to re-think the budget for her Xmas present, something sparkly!

That will be remembered and used freely when required.

You may choose to invest in some new clothing.

DH: "Why are you hurting the car?"
DH: *Proceeds to anthropomorphise the fk out of Suzi the Suzuki*
DH: "She's in pain. She wants you to use a lower gear, the current one is too high for her"

The Narrator: It caused a monumental argument but Wifey won't forget what he said -- she needs to remember the words so she can use them against him in future arguments.

I told my wife it was better to keep the revs up a bit to keep the battery charged up. I told her the heater used a lot of electricity and so did the Aircon in the summer so she had to do it all year . It has got a bit better.

4th gear at 20mph? It'll be fine, a bazillion taxi drivers can't be wrong.

She needs a Fiat Panda 1.1. 20 in 1st, 40 in 2nd, 60 in 3rd, 4th and 5th are merely variable noise levels.

Love mine.

Get her an automatic.

It will be cheaper than a divorce.

Easy for me to say, but I'd probably mansplain why it's not good.
She clearly doesn't understand that what she's doing could damage anything.

She might not be over the moon about being told but I doubt she wants to knacker her car either.

Get someone else to be the hatchet man.

Or give the car a weekly Italian tuneup yourself.

I believe this stuff is why diesels and latterly EVs seem so good to a lot of people. The way they deliver performance really suits the vast majority of disinterested users.

"It might be worth changing car to an automatic dear, as you don't seem able to change gear on your own"

Or something along those lines
