Some people I know run a convenience store which has a small free car park. Naturally it gets abused by people leaving cars there while they walk to distant shops or even the tube station. They don't want to charge customers but are considering monitoring number plates with some kind of charge for anything over 30 mins.

But one ingenious suggestion from one of the older members of staff was to say anyone could park there providing they left their headlamps on. Would this work? I have an idea modern cars can keep lights on for a surprisingly long time before the battery goes flat.

I think they d just end up with a number of cars in their car park with flat batteries awaiting the AA.

The draw from modern LED and xenon lights is lower, to be fair. Still hard to police though… what if they park with their lights off.

I’d imagine a few well-placed and properly written signs threatening fines would be enough. They could obtain keeper details of blatant offenders and send them a parking charge.

Would it work? Why would it work. Why would anybody willingly leave their headlights on.

Exactly, I do not know of any reasonably modern cars that allow you to leave the headlights actually on, even if switched on.

It is a shame but not surprising that people take the mickey and abuse it.

They should workout the cost to the business of just locking it and not providing parking.

They can then decide whether it is worth the hassle of a) just leaving as is or b) some sort of enforcement.
