I am interested in a suffix plate and it is advertised in multiple places varying from £2,600 to 3,800. Does this generally mean it is held on retention by a person and the companies are offering to sell it on their behalf?
Is there any way of cutting out the middle man or getting best deal?

Plate dealers keep very good databases of any plates they value plus they seem to share lists as I have advertised plates with one company and they appear on multiple sites at slightly higher prices.

In short it’s very hard to get to the actual seller direct. Also worth noting most plate dealers are very good at brokering deals but I often feel they are increasing their own commission at the expense of the buyer and seller. Every plate I have listed seems to get an initial offer of half what I agreed to market it at with lots of counter offers.

Maybe worth submitting and offer to start the process

My own plate is up for sale on a number of sites

But it’s not for sale lol, doesn’t seem to matter to them, tempted to enquire to see what happens

Tell them you want it at any price!

They would call the last known owner to establish availability.

Eventually they would find out it’s not for sale

And then they would delete it for sale from their site

But if the original commission got circulated from another dealer it would likely keep getting recirculated and keep popping up.

So you’d just ask for them to let everyone know it has sold and they would do that and (eventually) it would disappear.

Yes generally your assumption is correct.

Some quote inc vat some quote plus vat (if vat applicable)

You’d essentially find the cheapest dealer as they’re most likely to be direct to the source and make your offer via them.

Or you can try and find the owner direct and cut out the dealer. Sometimes that works but often it doesn’t as sometimes the seller would only go through the dealer (different sellers can have different favored dealers)

Many thanks for all your replies.

I will probably make a cheeky offer and see where it leads.

I've seen my perfect plate for sale on one of these sites. One of the well known ones! My 2 initials and the 2 digit year of my birth. Its up for £30k which is 30k more than I have laugh

How can it be in any way legal to advertise something for sale that they have no way of selling? The site in question, even had has a link to buy it immediately. And transfer money!

How big a con is the private plate game? rolleyes

I've seen plates for sale on various sites which are for sale on the DVLA's own site for £250 with mark ups applied, I imagine if you were to buy it from one of the sites other than DVLA they would quickly jump on the DVLA website and buy it there and sell it on with the mark up

Certainly can seem like a con

But if you paid for it and it turned out not to be available you would get a refund.

It is however advised to email or call a dealer first to ascertain availability to save the hassle.

Let’s say the number plate XXX 1 was for sale and listed by an owner and they then sell the number plate and the dealer doesn’t know then it will still appear for sale and so then the new owner can say ‘why is my number plate XXX 1 for sale when I haven’t told you to advertise it’

That’s the most common reason
