Seeing a certain type or style of car do you expect to see it driven by a certain type of person ?

My sister had a Honda Jazz whilst in her early 30s. I think she was the only non-OAP driver of a Jazz in our town and we used to mock her whenever one drove past and it was always some old biddy driving.

I believe they are viewed as a young person's car in America.

When I see a mid-late 2000s RR I expect to see a man in his early 50’s, big gut and a stone island jacket on. Usually got some gold chains to really make the old gangster look complete. Often seen parked on building sites, presumably their day jobs. In the wild can also be seen taking the wife and kids to Asda for the big shop where all goods will be paid for in cash.

Jokes aside, evoque drivers usually 20/30 year olds, white ones often by young women

When MG SUVs were first introduced they were universally driven by doddery OAPs and housewives.

Now every rental car fleet have gadzillions of them and are driven by a younger crowd.

I think this is getting harder! Old biddies don't seem to drive Micras and Jazzes any more. Go to a garden centre and the car park is full of large SUVs or crossover types. My inlaws are of that age, and just get whatever the current biggest Fiat 500/600 thing is. PCP contract for two years, no chance of going over their mileage allowance and the garage sorts everything that breaks (which seems to be needed every couple of months).

Jaecoo are putting their Temu-grade Range Rover-like products in the hands of folk who were previously driving Fiat 500s. All the apprentice hair technician/nail technician girlies around here seem to be driving the J7. I thought these were exclusively EVs, but I saw one at close range recently that sounded like it had an agricultural 3-pot engine churning away below deck. Doesn't matter however, as it looks a bit like Range Rover and it as a big screen in the dashboard, and that is what is important.

MG SUVs seem to be driven by the elderly, who probably think they are still buying a prestige heritage British brand insome capacity. They are also driven by slightly fraught, haughty mothers to ship their five hollow-legged rugby playing sons around in. The kids have plummy Scottish names like Ruraidh and Angus, but sound like they were raised in the Cotswolds.

One car type I stay out the way of is anything BMW/Merc that is 15 years old, silver but gone that satin/scratched way, clouded up headlights etc. Doubly so if the driver is wearing high vis and/or the car has any obvious modifications such as lowered suspension or weird headlight colour filters. Go to the worst area of the worst town nearest you and you see barried up German 'whips' rotting away on driveways or pulling out into oncoming traffic.

There's an old lady who drives a Mk2 Focus RS round my way.

I think this happens when the old lady goes into the dealership she has always used and asks for the "top of the range", hoping for a swish GLS/Ghia velour and wood number.

I used to live in a 3rd storey apartment and when I first moved in there circa 2007, I found out that my kitchen window overlooked the enclosed parking area (like a courtyard) for another apartment building across the way. And of course, being into cars, the first thing I spotted was a gleaming black 997 Turbo which would have been fairly new at that time. It looked like it was modified - definitely sitting lower than normal, and it had a fairly tasteful set of aftermarket wheels which were slightly larger than OEM. I assumed it belonged to some young rich type in that building.

Assumptions are often wrong of course, and over the next year I saw the owner getting into it multiple times and also spotted him driving it a few times - about 80, spectacles, grey haired with a long grey beard, on the more stocky side and seemed to have some mobility issues getting in and out. Always thought he would make a great Santa Claus as a Christmas sideline.

Any modern VW transporter based camper.

I typically expect to see hippies, however they are typically owned by middle aged contracted project managers.

I've got an elderly neighbour who drives an M135i for this reason. He's always had BMWs, wanted to downsize but have the top of the range trim. It'll make a cracking used buy one day, apart from the kerbed wheels.

I saw a little old lady getting out of a properly parked new LR Defender. Really surprised me as they are usually driven incredibly badly by middle aged "hard" men who think they can do what they like.

That reminds me, I bought a very low mileage EK Civic VTi from the Isle of Man once and when I got to the owner's house, was surprised to find it was a very elderly and frail man. He was friendly but as soon as I started talking about why I wanted the car, realised he had no idea about vtec or b16a engines, he just bought the VTi as it was the top of the range trim. The car felt as tight as a gnat's ass so I doubt it had ever gone over 5000rpm until I got it.

No. This happens when people have a misconception about age.

An old man has an FK8 Type R round here and an old lady round the corner drives a GT86.

I aspire to be like them when I get to their ages.

I used to see an older woman doing the school run in her Lotus Carlton.
