Give cyclists priority at lights, says Lime boss

"Traffic lights in London should automatically turn green for cyclists to help speed up their journeys, according to an e-bike hire company."
On the face of it, this seems a sensible suggestion. The only concern might be other vehicles riding the tail of cyclists to get through the lights too.

No it's not. It's a 'kin stupid suggestion that will only serve to further alienate drivers and cyclists. Cyclists are no more important or special than anyone else and are required to obey the same rules of the road as every other road user. Anyway, at many junctions they already have priority in the form of their own green light that gives them a head start across the junction before the rest of the traffic moves."Traffic lights in London should automatically turn green for cyclists to help speed up their journeys, according to an e-bike hire company."

There are separate rules for cyclists.

You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement.
Laws HA 1835 sect 72 & R(S)A sect 129
And rule 69?
You MUST obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.
Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD schedule 3 part 3, schedule 7 part 4, schedule 9 parts 4 and 6, schedule 13 part 6, schedule 14 part 2
So if this step is introduced in London, what do you think will happen during rush hour Einstein? Most sets of traffic lights will NEVER change with the volume of cyclists! Good luck to emergency vehicles trying to get around cars, vans, buses and trucks in even longer traffic queues.
What happens when cyclists approach a crossroads from all directions? Do all lights go green for some cycling collisions?

I do agree that drivers and cyclists who don't obey the rules are

That s to be expected when the cyclist is being charged by the minute. Human nature being that some/many will choose not to obey red lights and/or hop up onto kerbs or cycle through no entry signs, over pedestrian only sections and so on.
I can t help wondering whether this is the back to front motivation behind the suggestion. That and general PR/marketing.
ETA in this part of outer London the electric assisted pedal cycles available for hire have a “free first ten minute” rule. Thus you see school children (and other users) riding them like they’re on fire to get as near to their ultimate destination before the ten minutes lapse whereupon the machines are gently and responsibly parked and the remainder of the journey completed on foot.
(I may have used poetic license is my description of the dismounting).

How often after traffic lights directly is road furniture, allowing cyclists off first let's them clear the narrowing, making drivers take off from lights, easier and safer, this is my experience as a driver and cyclist in central London
Well this is some reasonable discourse isn’t it.
I’m curious whether more cycle priority lights (I assume they have a proper name) would have the desired benefit (fewer cyclists hurt, more people feeling safe to cycle on the road), or would just aggravate things with increasingly frustrated drivers approaching at speed from behind.
Accordance to the Highway Code is a redundant thing to bring up - cyclists (and increasing numbers of drivers) skip red lights all the time, ride on pavements etc. Drivers speed, use their phone, try and block cyclists filtering/reaching bike boxes. It’s all around us.
What the worst offence is and who’s the most despicable human is clearly in the eye of the beholder, rather than some coppers enforcing the rules unfortunately.
When the pro cycling, ban-all-cars conspiracy wins, the anti-cycling camp will presumably at least be pleased to see HMG implementing bike speed cameras, pay-per-mile cycle taxes to make up for lost revenue.

What are these "separate rules for cyclists"?But at weekends they'll crawl up hills 4 or 5 abreast, especially to anywhere on the 2012 Olympic route like Newlands Corner or Box Hill.
They make their own rules up to suit themselves, much like any other self-entitled minority group.
I rode a bike to school most days in the early 70s as it was better than waiting for a bus, and rode from Ewell to see a school-mate in Boxhill about 15 miles away a few times, but tried to keep out of the way (and Lycra hadn't been invented)!
But after I turned 16 and got a moped I didn't miss having to pedal.
