Discussion
I bought one nearly 3 years ago after a woman cut the corner where I was stationary with the handbrake on and promptly smashed into the front of me writing my car off.
She was very apologetic at the scene but then told her insurance company that I had pulled out on her.
Anyway, I bought a NextBase 422GW. I have it hardwired, but the hardwire kit was an extra, by default it has the 12v accessory plug.
Seems to do the job well, luckily I haven't had to rely on it. Occasionally I have to format the memory card, but I think you have to do that on most of them..

I had this, too, chap apologized, his failt etc, but then changed his story. Fortunately already had a dadhcam, but the other driver didn't know. Even tried to take me to court. I would to have seen his face when his solicitor showed the video to him. Anyway, case was dropped shortly after.
Wouldn't drive without one.
I've Snoopers but only because they used to flag fixed speed cameras which is redundant now (Waze etc) Have been very reliable too.
In all my cars I've just tucked the the cable behind the A post trim.
They are not hard wired which could be a benefit if your car is often left vulnerable.
If buying again I'd also add rear facing cameras.

We use Viofo A129 Duo across our fleet. They have the benefit of being a dual front and rear system, which was handy for us in 2022 when proving my wife wasn't at fault when she got rear ended (steady..!)
We've had them in since around May 2022, coming up 4 years now and absolutely no issues whatsoever with them. They just seem to work, however being at least 4 years old I suspect there are more modern versions on the market. Still, the A129 is IMO a very good bit of kit.

Thanks. Perhaps ambitiously hoping for a rechargeable one with integrated memory/paired to a phone?
(yes I could research this better)
I bought a Nextbase one from Halfords for my daughter's car. The optional rear camera plugs into the side of it. Its rechargeable and connects to an app.(yes I could research this better)

She ended up getting it hard-wired in the end... very discreet, just took a line off the courtesy light module by the mirror.

Just spoken to the second friend this week that has had a non-fault accident proved thanks to a dash cam, figure it might be time to get one.
Any recommendations? Ideally one that doesn't need hardwiring?
If you're not comfortable with hardwiring, there are companies that will fit.Any recommendations? Ideally one that doesn't need hardwiring?
They are a really good investment.
I've had a few over the years, both in my car and my other half's. Admittedly, I've only needed mine to help someone else claim on their insurance but for helping if you do need a claim they are invaluable.
I have a Nextbase 522GW in one car as does my other half, definitely a big improvement in quality over the early Nextbase models which worked but felt very flimsy.
I recently fitted a Nextbase Piqo 2k which is a much smaller and more discreet camera, it has no screen on the back so is completely invisible when tucked behind your rear view mirror. You just connect via an app and control the settings.
Hard wired kit is the best option so if you have fuses either side of the dash to piggy back off that's a good shout. I actually use an OBDII connection kit that powers the camera and was even easier to set up in my 6 series.

Viofo A129 Duo
A very good choice for a straightforward "it's a camera" setup.https://dashcamtalk.com/ will have way more info for this subject.

I've got an old Viofi with just the front, but I fitted the 129 Duo for my wife and it's great. We've had them in since around May 2022, coming up 4 years now and absolutely no issues whatsoever with them. Mine's finally starting to play up after years of being fitted and I think I'll go for the Duo next.
