Manhart resurrects M760Li with 711hp upgrade

BMW's V12-powered saloon was always a niche prospect - even more so with 774lb ft of torque...

In a world that’s soon to welcome an all-electric 3 Series, it’s hard to fathom that BMW offered a V12 in its 7 Series until as recently as the last World Cup. But they did alright, and some driving experience the M760Li offered up as well, with an engine fit for a Rolls-Royce and all the technology BMW had available in its considerable arsenal right up until 2022. The last time PH drove one, a three-year-old example was deemed better than a then-new Audi S8, thanks to its effortless comfort, surprising agility, and epic 6.6-litre motor.

Manhart is as much a fan, seemingly, as John was back then, as it has launched a range of upgrades for the M760Li - despite it going out of production four years ago. They reckon this MH7 700 is a ‘modern interpretation of the ultimate luxury saloon’, with power for the N74B66 engine now rated at 711hp. The torque is even more impressive, though, and that’s what’s really important for easy, enormous speed: 590lb ft has become 774lb ft. Or more than twice that of an M240i. It’s all achieved through the MHtronik powerbox and a Manhart exhaust that promises ‘an even more distinctive sound’. When it comes to having a V12, if you’ve got it then flaunt it, right?

Perhaps more than any other Manhart BMW, you’re probably going to want to keep a long-wheelbase 7 Series looking quite stealthy. For those who don’t, there are Manhart’s Concave One wheels available, plus some carbon body bits and, of course, the decal set. The air suspension can even be lowered for a punchier stance, and perhaps that’s one more modification to let through - no harm in a bit more moodiness with 711hp under the bonnet.

The totally overhauled interior may appeal to M760Li customers more than carbon mirror gaps, here with new colours, stitching and logos. Certainly more interesting than plain old black. Exactly what it’ll cost to make an M760Li like this isn’t quite clear for the moment, as there’s not a price for the exhaust, but with the €2,635 powerbox, €1,100 decals and €500 air suspension fiddle you’ll be a lot of the way there (if carbon door handles can be resisted). And how much for an M760Li donor car? About £100,000 less than would have been paid at the end of the 2010s…

Arrrgghh! What's happening? I can't stand the current 7 Series, but that actually looks quite nice.

I often look at these as a "practical" way to scratch the V12 itch. However, the images seem to be cars with 4 seats with the console in the middle at the back. However the image in this article suggests a standard 5 seat layout. Anyone know if having 5-seats is an option?

Now that's quite a thing to behold. Much less garish than yesterday's Bugatti offering.

Yes, mine has 5 seats. Quite a few of the used ones for sale currently have that console, AKA Executive Lounge.

Was going to be scornful.
But having seen the shamelessly huckstering advertorial for the vile GM SUVs, this 7-series a tonic.
And it’s a V12.
Paint it Marina Bay Blue; lose the tints, carbon tat, vid screens and seat logos; keep the rest, especially the 2-tone chairs.

Had one, not 760 mind, 750. And it was very underwelming. Not that luxururious (5 series inside), not that comfy, not that good to drive. I got rid of it after 3months. And I still struggle, if I see one on the road, is it a 7 or a 5 series? Only that thing on the door sets them apart...

My FIL has an M760Li and it is anything but underwhelming. I was surprised by how rapid it felt for such a big barge, so I imagine this is quite something. I'd certainly have one of these over the current 7-Series anyway.

Not a fan of the interior, I owned a 2016 M760Li for 2 years, full spec and what an absolutely brilliant car. Couple of European road trips and daily driver, in my opinion the standard 620 bhp was plenty and no real need for this upgrade, just my opinion. Now running an M5 comp stage 2, completely different animal but i do miss the big 7 series lump and the refinement inside.

Love it. Proper car. Proper engine.

The earlier M760Li models are representing good value for the performance and luxury on offer.

I always wonder if folk actually drive these cars using all that power ?

Can see it making sense on the Autobahn to a point, and obviously more is better but even the base petrol does sixty in 5.4 seconds, these arent cars that typically get thrown around.

I suppose there would have been an M7 if there was a big market for it ?

For some reason the current 7 looks to me like an F10 5 with the G30 5 series front end on it.

Do like that light bar on the rear though...

I can’t speak for others, but I certainly use all the torque quite frequently and probably half the power in UK. Once in Europe there are opportunities to use all the power. Does it need more, no. Would it be interesting to see what it would do, yes. Provided they deal with the limiters in the car.

If BMW ever made an M7, this would not be the starting point. Too heavy, too long and it would stop the 7er doing what it does well. Alpina B7 is probably a closer match, but I’ve never driven one.

Half the power and all the torque, that sound suspiciously close to a 740D's outputs.

I expect it is, but it misses the point of the 760 by miles.

Yes, I was going to say that, Diesel 6 <> Petrol V12 but its the law of diminishing returns, a 740D is perfectly fine, fast enough etc, its a hell of an uplift for the additional power you dont really use and smoothness, though have to say, the diesels are ok on the move, just tend to notice them on start and idle.
