Car in garage for issue - employee uses car to commute
Discussion
This may be a slightly vague topic, as my car is with the garage and a formal letter has been sent to the owner to explain/resolve.
At this point I will not state the car or garage, in the hope they resolve the issue, my review will then reflect accordingly.
Car went in for starting issue - garage contact to say its been fixed (issue still ongoing) third time now, same issue.
Car has then subsequently been used to commute and run errands, adding 140+ miles to the clock, the car has also been used outside of normal working hours and the dashcam has picked up on several speeding offences on dual carriageways - with a top speed of 88mph recorded.
The garage have filled the tank and been quite flippant on the added mileage, stating it cant be removed! no s
t sherlock! but the crux of the issue is no authority had been given to drive the car.
Where do I stand, what can be done, what should I ask the garage in terms of how to put this right, they have asked what can we do?
I'm not sure what I want from them, I have lost faith in them and don't really want anything from them, but this misuse of my car has annoyed me.
I cannot provide any further specific details as the issue remains and the garage have the car again.

So the garage use the car(real world use) to diagnose, fix and confirm problem fixed.
What's the big deal?

Seriously? What's the big deal with that?

Given (if I understand the OP's statement) that the problem seems to be a recurring one, allowing a mechanic to take the car home could be seen to be a cheaper way to conduct testing than using paid hours to test the car. What's the big deal?
I wouldn't be too concerned about high speed - so long as any speeding tickets were covered - and 88 mph isn't that fast so long as the road conditions were appropriate. I'd be more annoyed if the dashcam showed them ragging the arse off it though.

My Dad had a cold start issue on a Mercedes, and the Mercedes dealer (independent back then) asked if the mechanic could drive it 6 miles home to help diagnose the issue. That's the difference, they asked first. What's the big deal?

140 miles, for commuting and errands, and way over the limit.I wouldn't be too concerned about high speed - so long as any speeding tickets were covered - and 88 mph isn't that fast so long as the road conditions were appropriate. For me that's well into taking the piss territory. We all have cars that need a road test - within garage hours and not for 140 miles.
some what normal for a senior member to ask to take it home , but not take it on chip runs /general messing about , not pimply youth ragging it about for a joyride
enough for them to witness a cold start from overnight
doubt this will go anywhere , leave an accurate google review is the only way to get at these places

But you can see a cold start in the garage the next morning, it does not have to be on your driveway? I bet the garage is charging for all the hours to drive around and 'test' the car.enough for them to witness a cold start from overnight
I do get the garage killing two birds with one stone such as testing a car and driving over to the main dealer to pick up a part. That makes a lot of sense.
IMO, should be done in work hours and should be done legally. I completely get that sometimes you need to give it a good thraping to prove a fix is secure or provoke a fault, and that the drive needs to be a reasonable length. But not taking home and not breaking speed limits.

yeah most cases ought to be able to checked at the garage , just saying ive seen it happen all innocent and above board with older members of staff , BUT the customer was asked and agreed to itMy friend left her citroen van with a mechanic for a smokey exhaust. After 3 weeks I asked her did she get sorted and was it injectors or turbo or what, only to be told they hadn't been able to look at it yet. I went down with her to get it back and it was in a different spot so asked if they had looked at it, no.
So told him we were taking it, and had to wait while scrap parts got taken out the back, when we got in it was stinking filthy with oil and rust stains on the light grey fabric seats. And mileage was over 400miles higher than when she dropped it off.

The maximum UK speed limit is 70mph. Presumably if you were in that situation and a speeding fine landed on your doormat, you'd happily pay up?Seriously? What's the big deal with that?
