I've just bought a car that was initially registered in Northern Ireland and therefore has a dateless plate. The car was imported to England in 2021.

I'd prefer a mainland UK registration with the year indicated by the digits. If I transfer the existing plate off the car, I think I'm right in saying the DVLA will assign a new one to it - but will it be a mainland UK plate or another NI plate?

If it is now in England you can get a free English reg to put on by contacting dvla. I've done the reverse a few times and it's been mostly painless, insurers were the only ones wanting paid an admin fee.

Ah, that's great to know - thanks!

Or of course I could take it off the car for £80 and try to sell it. Anyone know how much a completely random NI number plate is worth, and how easily they sell? smile The letter combo is WLZ.

If followed by 4 numbers then there is a firm that sells them for £29
