I hit a bird last night which seems to have resulted in my front number plate coming loose and falling off on a trip today - the problem is I'm 200 miles form home and therefore without the V5 to assist in getting another made up.

Does anyone have any experience of this/ if there's anything I can ask for from the DVLA whilst there's time in the week to sort before I need to get back?

I'd go to a motor factor with the car. That's surely better proof than a V5?

I've had a number plate made up before without a V5

Turn up at the accessory place with the car it'll be pretty obvious what car you want it for and why

Otherwise just drive home and if in the remarkable chance you get stopped just explain what happened

Don't stress over it

Make one? That couldn't be too difficult (in the event a motor factor doesn't play ball.)

Thanks - I'm trying that, but unfortunately initial calls round (I'd rather not drive the car without if possible) have resulted in a "can't help without the V5, sorry!"

ETA: Appreciate all the replies so far guys, that's at least put my mind at rest a little!

Amazon will do them without a V5 - but that may not be of any help.

I have also used https://aplates.co.uk if you say they're 'show plates' they offer next day delivery.

Your other option is to check around for anyone making event plates they say are not road legal (the ones who do weird fonts or shapes). Just get the plate made up with them without the British Standard marks, and replace with legal ones when home... I think you have a reasonable explanation if stopped (but unlikely to happen).

If you are where you are for a few days, postal is the other way?

^^^ OP, do this.

Really wouldn't be worrying about it (at all). Just get a new plate as soon as is practical.

I've never provided a V5 for a number plate to be made in 33 years. Just put your damaged one on the dash for now and sort it out when you get back home.

The bird you hit - can't you blame her and demand that she buys you a new numberplate?

I lost the front number plate from a Citroen Xantia many years ago -- secondhand dealer attached it with sticky pads seemingly ignorant of the convex (thanks Citroen) plate recess that necessitated fitment with screws, so it fell off whilst driving -- and wasn't in a position to have a new one made immediately. Nobody cared! I drove the car about for a week or so sans front plate.

That's assuming he's got the damaged one.

https://www.fancyplates.com/Buy-Plates/standard-uk... is based in Ireland so don't give a toss about V5 for a plate mate to the correct british standard.

Discovered the front plate on one of the cars was missing when I went to wash it. I have no idea where the plate went or how long it was gone for. Also couldn't find the V5. Took car to Halfords and they made me a new plate on the spot. No trouble and no questions.

I've had plates off Amazon Prime before for the daily, not sure how long you have left on your trip. Maybe worth looking into. Get it delivered to your next stop.

Or just drive to a motor factors, show them your plate'less car.
