2015 Mazda MX-5 2.0 Sport Nav | PH Fleet

When we left Ben, he'd SORN'd his MX-5 for winter. Guess how long that lasted...

If you were bored enough to read my last update in December, you may recall I’d tucked the MX-5 up in the garage and declared it SORN. That lasted all of about three weeks. With milder conditions, no salt on the road and the sun shining on Christmas Day, it would have been rude not to take GY65 GMO out for a spin. As much as I enjoy driving with the roof down in the summer in T-shirt and shorts, having it down in the winter with the heated seats, a warm coat and a beanie on is just as enjoyable.

I failed to pull my finger out and find a solution for retrofitting Apple Carplay over the winter so that’s still on the shortlist, but I did at least get the steering wheel retrimmed by Royal Steering Wheels. I went for slightly thicker Alcantara, chunkier thumb grips, red stitching and a red leather band at 12 o’clock, which set me back £220. But it was worth every penny, and coupled with the heavier IL Motorsport gearknob, it really makes the MX-5 feel much more purposeful to drive. It’s a perfect match for all the OEM Alcantara trimmings I’ve been adding too.

Of course, the really exciting bit arrived with a visit to Performance Link in Gloucestershire for an exhaust manifold and remap. The OEM manifold really restricts the airflow, and the factory mapping has further restrictions that are all cheerfully eliminated as part of the remap process. Mazda couldn’t have too many hairdressers ending up sideways into hedges now.

A manifold and remap for an ND1 at Performance Link is £1,299 with a decat race manifold, or £1,349 with a sports catted manifold. My car achieved a mighty 185bhp and 178 ft lb of torque (up from 160 and 148 respectively), with the rev limiter raised up to a sweet 7,300rpm. If you own an ND2, you can expect over 200bhp. Which may not sound like a huge amount, but for a car that weighs just over a tonne, it’s the sweet spot for putting a huge smile on your face, without constantly risking losing your licence.

I’ve had plenty of experience with having turbocharged cars remapped, but this was my first time with something naturally aspirated. It wasn’t long ago that I had my Ford Fiesta ST mapped, adding circa 15% more horsepower winding up the boost on the turbo. The gains on the MX-5 aren’t too dissimilar but are very different in feel. The ST was night and day different, with power delivery much more aggressive thanks to a greater gain in torque.

Pinning the throttle in a straight line in the MX-5 isn’t quite as transformative, yet if you dig a little deeper, the power gains become more obvious. It now pulls harder through the rev range right up to the limiter. The back end is keener to step out under heavy acceleration, and it generally feels more eager to pick up speed at any time. Worth the wait then? Absolutely. It feels like the MX-5 is becoming more of my own, and is now even more entertaining to drive.

The next step in power would be to add cams that could see another 10-15bhp added, but at a greater cost (£1,750) for less of a gain, comparatively speaking. It’s tempting but for now, I’m just going to enjoy the extra power I now have in GY65 GMO and this lovely spring weather while it lasts. I’m tempted to tighten up the suspension with some lowering springs or coilovers later in the year, but I don’t want to compromise the ride quality with my local roads in such a dire state. Any tips or shared experiences are very welcome in the comments!

The manifold and map seems like great value compared to some other establishments. Would be high up my list of modifications if I ever get round to buying one of these.

Maybe worth speaking to Paul Roddison? The previous owner of my ND1 had his cams, 4 branch headers and a remap now makes a conservative 210BHP @ 7,400 RPM. I can't speak highly enough of it, we're still in touch and he regrets selling it.

Abarth 124 Spider speedometer? What’s the deal? Is it like Spinal Tap amp that goes up to 11 maybe?

I'd love an MX5 but sadly I don't fit in them.

That manifold and remap looks like a decent power increase for the money, and I love the colour!

I've just never been a fan of convertibles of any description, so I suppose I'd have to find an RF.

But I've been seduced by power now that I have a fun Coupe with 300+bhp, even if I can't use it for more than a few seconds at a time. laugh

Love reading about these. There’s a mini revolution happening in our car club, lads adding these to their big M/GT car garages and seeing the light, literally and metaphorically

Change the gearbox oil. It’s a bit of a weak point- BOFI can help with recommendations.

Roddisons has developed his own. His 'Magical Mystery Brake Pads' are sold via Bofi so that's probs the oil.

I could not agree more with this. I was out XMAS eve down here in Devon with the roof down with Mrs Frog, heater on etc, looking at the clear night sky. Heavenly!
Damn Ben, Performance Link are not that far from me and I promised Mrs Frog I wouldn't modify her MX-5 but it sounds very tempting!
Request as I am old . Between now and your next can you monitor then report back on any difference (+ or -) on your fuel economy after doing these modifications?

Manifold and the remap are great choices and looking at those prices top bang for buck also.

I've had lots of Nat asp cars enhanced through these 'old school' works and they are always IMO more noticeable and broadly more enhancing than turbo remaps.

The 10-15 for the cams is obviously less effective on a bang for buck basis but of course it's not just the power it's the changes in the engine, tone and driving they also add.

However for that level of gain and cost. I would look at the cost analysis of what a similar lift in BHP/tonne could be gained from some lightweighting.

I'd be confident for less than the cams you could find a similar or better uplift in BHP/tonne through some weight saving.

And of course as we all know weight saved improves a car in almost every meaningful way , more so than power.

Something like dead weight industries lightweight battery for instance. (I'm not affiliated) Or even a drive shaft replacement to something lighter (is it already aluminium in an mx5? Or even carbon fibre prop shaft just as ideas.

Good update again. Great car.

I think this era MX5 look great - there were loads when we were on the Cotswolds last Friday.

The steering wheel looks grand (had similar done recently by RSW and am really happy with it).

Interior and internals look spectacular. I know these cars aren't about number chasing, but would be keen to learn what these remaps/tune ups do to the acceleration times if anyone knows?

Just love an MX-5.

Convinced it’s the only sports card you need.

I'm booked in with Royals in a couple of weeks for a new wheel (flat bottom and altered profile).

Tempted by modding further, headers+remap plus new exhaust - tempted by centre exit from Cobra (local in Sheffield)

Brakes and suspension should come first I suppose... see what happens post-euro roadtrip next month

How tall are you? I’m 6’4” and fit snugly. I fitted Jass seat rails which mean I can even get a helmet on with the roof up.

Have a look at the BBR Koni Sport dampers and progressive springs Ben if you want to tighten up control while maintaining ride quality. Cheaper than a lot of coilovers, reliable with a good warrantee and you can still wind them down tight if you take it on track.

I have pretty much this same car, albeit the non recaro edition. Interested in these headers. Do they pass MOT ok? Where is Paul Roddison based?
