New Trialmaster X tops Ineos Grenadier range

'The most capable and well-equipped model in the Grenadier line up' is on sale now

Ineos certainly couldn’t be accused of not offering its Grenadier customers plenty of choice. There’s SUV or pick up, for one thing, van or civilian spec, petrol or diesel, the chassis cab, the Arcane Works bespoke division… it would seem that most bases are covered. But Ineos has spotted an opportunity amongst all that, the result being the creation of the Grenadier Trialmaster X. It basically takes the off-road goodies of a Trialmaster with all the convenience features of a Fieldmaster, creating ‘a new elite specification for the Grenadier.’

Available as both a Station Wagon and Quartermaster truck, Trialmaster X gets locking diffs on both axles, BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres, a raised air intake, safari windows and lockable external storage. On the Fieldmaster side of the equation, that means heated leather seats and a ‘premium sound system’. The usual catalogue of Ineos accessories can also be added on; there’s a standard-fit tow ball with a seven-ton gross train weight.

Ineos Automotive CEO Lynn Calder said: “Three years on from launch, we continue to evolve the Grenadier line-up, broadening its appeal in response to customer feedback. Building on the significant enhancements introduced for 2026, Trialmaster X is the pinnacle all-rounder. The ultimate combination of off-road toughness, premium day-to-day comfort and intrepid spirit.”

The new model is on sale now, priced at £75,195 for the SW and £75,010 for a Quartermaster - £5k more than either Trialmaster or Fieldmaster spec. Devil Red, Scottish White, Magic Mushroom and Donny Grey are the colours offered. Expect it on the road (and a long way off it) soon.

I always thought every car ( or product, for that matter ) should have a unique selling point which will draw a certain buyer to it. For someone ( not everyone ) it has to do something that they value better than every other competitor to make it worth buying.

I really struggle as to what that might be for an Ineos.

I see more of these around where I live than new LR Defenders, so someone must like them.

....I do however live in a rural area and so expect the LR offering is likely to be more attractive to the more image conscious urbanites, less likely to venture off road. There's a vape shop in our local town and the owner drives a murdered out SWB Defender and many of the yummies at our village school rock up in one, resplendent with that silly box clagged on the side.

This is weird, there’s nothing there that you couldn’t spec on any other Grenadier.

The only place I've seen a Grenadier where I live is in Waitrose carpark.

There's so many Defenders flying around you'd think they were giving them away.

As a Donny resident I think this is a bit of a piss take hehe

No way do we get less sun than anywhere West of us. Just the 15 miles to Sheffield, which I do most days and it's more often than not greyer in the lee of the Pennines.

True, but it is a little cheaper than ticking most boxes on the configurator! £78,265 vs £75,195.

Wonder if you can deselect options. I'd have it all except the raised air intake.

I'd imagine it'll still be cheaper to go for the X and ask them not to put it in the boot at the dealer.

I was hoping the styling would grow on me but alas no.

It's still looks terrible (in my eyes).

Horribly busy design for a function-over-form utilitarian wagon.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

It will be interesting if they can keep to their sales targets now they've saturated the Ineos fleet.

I live out in the sticks atm and I see quite a few Grenadiers, mostly towing trailers and horse boxes.

When the locals aren't towing something though, they seem to prefer small, cheap 4x4s because they're better for navigating the narrow lanes. Stuff like the Jimny, Ignis AllGrip, Panda 4x4.

Looks ok as a rugged 4x4 but the Defender has more presence

I think it had to be fussy to avoid being too much of a rip-off of the Defender IP.

It’s the details for me. I think the general design looks ok. The rear lights look like they came from AliExpress and those accessory holders (?) on the doors look like someone’s ripped some plastic cladding off.

If it had a 2 inch lift...I'd consider one as an alternative to a Defender, after it suffers a great deal of depreciation. They looks slightly better in the metal, but do need to sit higher.

Its point is that it is like a refined old Defender. It is massively robust ( yes I tried one and the pedals were fine!) I also respect the present Defender but the Ineos is far less yummie mummy in its image. Also, it no longer seems ( totally) silly money. To lighten the post a mum picks up at a local school in a G Wagen Brabus

Ineos are no longer going to develop vehicles themselves. It looks like they’ll be getting Chinese platforms going forwards.

I guess the experiment has failed and they can’t afford to develop unique products.
