So having not bought a new car since 1986, a white Fiat Panda 4x4 no less, my wife gave me an(other) order that she wanted a new car It was expensive but “Happy wife , Happy life”. I drove it back from the dealer and that was the last time I was allowed to drive it until yesterday when she suggested that I put it in the car port as the weather was bad. Well I am quite mechanically minded, having built up two cars, in 1976 I put a 3 litre Ford V6 into an RS body shell, brand new in grey primer. £275 from Ford AVS
Capri 3 litre gearbox and overdrive from a crashed Gilbert Invader. Did all the wiring as well. I then put all those mechanicals into a Dutton Phaeton which I still have. Bragging a bit I know but just to show that I have a fair amount of knowledge
Anyway , back to the car port. So I drive it in no problem but a Kawasaki Mule was already in there and I had to come in at an angle down a short not very steep ramp. Was about to open the door when I discovered that a hose reel was preventing me from exiting so I returned to the car put it in reverse but somehow the handbrake was locked on I had not touched the button. But I tried everything, foot on brake whilst pushing button and managed to reverse in a series of jerks before the brake locked again
Looked up the problem on the web and discovered that the car puts the handbrake on automatically on a slope but will not disengage unless you have your seat belt on. I had only driven about ten yards on our driveway! Apparently it also will not disengage unless if you open a door perhaps to just check when you are reversing
Too much nanny motoring for me I am afraid!
