Sorry if this has been asked before. I've transferred many reg. numbers and have done it regularly.

However, two years ago, I bought car car for me, which had a crap personal plate that the previous owner of the car couldn't be bothered to retain.

I didn't want it and transferred my own plate to the car. I did not pay to retain the other crap plate, so assumed it's gone to plate heaven.

When I sell the car and put my own plate back on retention, what will be assigned back to the car? The original plate or the crap personal one?

Perfect. I'd hoped that was the case. Thanks!

Disagree. I think the previous plate will be reverted to.

You could ask DVLA to ensure it reverts to the plate when new

If you're selling it, does it matter?

Or is it one of those "BO55" ones that immediately knocks 10% off the value of the car on the basis it's been owned by a complete twunt?

The personalised plate could indeed be both, the previous plate AND the original plate …then you’re guaranteed the naff plate back hehe.

(ps. I also think ‘previous plate’ will be returned)

If the OP hasn't kept it on retention and it went back to the DVLA, could they have sold it on to the next punter who wants a crappy plate? In which case the car will be given a new issue age correct plate?
