New here, just a random question.

I may have been caught speeding in another car. I am fully comp. I used to drive other vehicles too and was all insured. Apparently it has changed and you NEED to ask for driving other cars now on insurace.

If it comes through I'll accept the punishment obviously as it's down to me, but if it isn't on will I likely just get the fine for the points or will I get additional points as I didn't get the add on from the insurance to drive other cars? Thank you for any assistance

Check your policy documentation.

Yes, on the certificate of insurance there should be wording to the effect the policyholder is also insured to drive other vehicles that are not owned or hired by him/herself.
Other caveats can apply.

Interesting you say that you have to ask for such cover, i didn't know that was a thing, i recall NFU actually writing to me back around 2010 when i had a Hilux on commercial vehicle policy with them, they were removing the driving other cars from commercial vehicle policies but made sure everyone affected was aware this was happening.

You are probably right, I was just told you have to ask for it now. It is what it is though. I know it used to be on, and I haven't asked for it to be removed so fingers crossed it's still on.

He is correct, not probably correct. Instead of crossing your fingers, check your documents.

My policy allows me to drive any car with the owners permission - I have never asked for this, it's just a feature of the policy.

You’ve been caught speeding. They won’t ask for any insurance documents

What do you mean by "another car"?

If they notice you were driving uninsured (which they may well not), you'll probably get an additional six points and a smallish fine on top of whatever you get for the speeding offense.

No help on the points side - however I took a policy with Direct Line for the first time this year and noted 'Drive other Cars' was included without me asking for it, never had it before.

Seems to vary - I recall daughter saying she had to ask for it, but can’t remember the insurer. I think it’s generally not on under-25’s policies, but the OP is obviously older than that. I’ve read that if the car is leased then the policy often doesn’t have DOC.

When we went down to one car in Covid, LV added DOC for me as a named driver onto her policy and it’s still there.

Insurers widely took DOC off cars years ago because the Government felt it was being misused. Some put it back after a customer backlash, but others didn’t.

Anyway - based on our family experience if the OP’s daughter put him on the policy as a named driver the premium should drop, we’re both named on our “kids” policies, one looked to take us off a couple of years ago when she got an EV and the premium bumped up but it was dearer without us.

I’ve been caught speeding 5 times in my life (I’m not bragging) but not once have I been asked for insurance details. Don’t worry about it (but you should still check for future).

Check your policy and see if it includes the necessary cover for driving your daughter's car.

If it doesn't, maybe get it added on for future use, but I'd say in regard to your immediate situation, keep your mouth shut and wait for the authorities to flag something up. I suspect nothing will come of it.

You only get the highest points for any given occasion, they don't get added together.

Thanks for the responses.

I'll check my docs when I get home. I'll be naming myself anyway (as it was me driving) so I'll acccept whatever I get. Is the worst case scenario 6 points? And is it a much heavier fine?

Thank you

Even if it's two entirely independent offenses?

Depends on the extent of the speeding, what was the limit and how fast do you think you may have been driving?

That’s true in Court but I’d be amazed if two fixed penalties aren’t just added together.

And the no insurance penalty is £300 - not what I’d call “smallish”.

Anyway, likely all this is moot - it’s another new poster panicking as he might have seen a cop and now thinks he could be looking at life inside.

The fact that the fine for driving without insurance is half the average cost of insurance makes it seem quite low to me, at least when viewed as a deterrent!

I think worst case (assuming the speeding wasn't by much) would be 9 points and about £400 in fines. Plus whatever effect having to declare a conviction for driving without insurance puts on future insurance premiums.

As others have said though, most likely they wont even notice. In fact it's hard to see how they could notice as long as you're sensible and just pay the speeding fine with the minimum of fuss. They don't have the resource to dig into the Ts and Cs of every speeder's insurance contract!
