I tried to put my private plate on the other week and had an error online saying it couldn't be done. Phoned them up and a lady said I need to post it in as the car had previously been sorn and they wanted to see the paperwork. In this day and age of computers it seems a bit antiquated of waiting for paper to come through. What is the general waiting these days. Haven't had a replacement car since before COVID.

Thanks

I sent a V5C off to have the date of manufacture added on March 31st, and received the new one on May 12th, so about six weeks.

I'd recommend sending the document in tracked post as well - DVLA (or I guess Royal Mail) have managed to lose mine - their response is "tough, pay £25 for a replacement"

A couple of months ago I had my private plate transferred on to my daily driver, when I bought a Lexus from a main dealer, they advised me DVLA now apparently process private plates every biweekly Thursday.

It took approximately 3weeks for my docs to be sent and processed back, including the reg plate transfer

Is there anyway to tax the car as I've now sent the v5c off and don't know the special code on the top.

I think DVLA needs an overhaul it's extremely frustrating and outdated service.

I don’t think so, you might have to call the DVLA… or just wait until your new one arrives

Yes, if the vehicle is registered in your name at your address, you'll receive a V11 tax reminder. You'll be able to tax it using this information. The registration number doesn't matter because it will just be the same vehicle with the tax, and it will transfer across when they update your registration.
