First Jensen Interceptor GTX will be track special

Initial GTX will serve as a preview to future models - and 'set pulses racing' in the meantime

The last time we left the all-new Jensen, its maker had confirmed that it would be called the GTX - though it seemed at the time that we were still heading toward the ‘ultra high performance luxury British GT’ that it had originally promised. Now, it seems, there has been a pivot: the first car revealed will instead be a ‘track-only special’, that will preview a future range of road-going GTs, though evidently remain separate from them. 

Jensen repeatedly describes it as ‘an enhanced prototype build’, which suggests that it isn’t ready just yet to show in its new model in its production guise - but rather than limit its unveiling to a static show car, the firm will use this early GTX variant to introduce the shared underpinnings in a more rousing format. And what’s more rousing than an Interceptor cutting loose on track? 

Of course, Jensen is very keen to remind us that while the GTX might share its name with another very famous Great British car, it is in fact entirely new, and is intended to eventually provide its buyers with ‘the ultimate analogue driving experience’. Hence, one suspects, the track-only kick off, where the full advantages of a new aluminium chassis and supercharged V8 ought to very swiftly become apparent. 

“We said we would set pulses racing and take Jensen into new territory with our first clean-sheet design, and ahead of the unveiling of our all-new car, we can reveal more on the philosophy behind it,” noted David Duerden, MD of Jensen International. “[The Interceptor GTX] is a track-focused special, developed as an enhanced prototype build, which will preview upcoming Jensen models. We can’t wait to unveil it to the world, fittingly sixty years after the launch of the original Jensen Interceptor.”

It's a lot harder and more expensive to build a road car than a track car.

Jensen don't really have any heritage in racing - sounds like they're doing this because the numbers aren't adding up on the road car....

Makes sense but I suspect I'm not alone in the fact that the last thing I think of, when I think of Jensen, is the race track.

I picture hand built quirky GT car. So it seems a marketing mis-step.

On the one hand perhaps a way to shake down, tune and sort the basic car, whilst binging in income. On the other hand a Super GT racing and Jensen. Sounds like an odd race car.

There has to be a market for a comfortable gt car that is small enough to park in a standard size space when you arrive at your destination. Just image being able to use your Jensen every day of the week.

As others have said this seems an odd move an sounds like they need some cash or to get a car running before type approval

Why?

Jensen Interceptor was never a track car.

I don't get the obsession where makers who used to build stylish, glamorous cars now want to ruin them by making them track cars.

Nothing about this says track car. No-one wants a Jensen track car. Very odd.
