I’ve had my leased Ford for several months with a couple of niggles appearing (obvious, it requiring diagnosis per se). Booked in with local Stoneacre and having just received invite to check-in online I see they are listing diagnosis as £200.

Naturally I’ll be calling them tomorrow but surely this isn’t right?

The warranty covers "manufacturing defects" not for example accidental damage by you or someone else, or deliberately driving through floodwater

The diagnostic fee should be waved when it is confirmed the the fault is covered by warranty

In broad terms, nothing is under warranty until it's been diagnosed and deemed so. A lot of places will initiate a charge up front then waive it / charge to warranty if the fault is a warranty concern. Stuff like spilling your vente latte with pumpkin essence into the centre console of your 2 month old Range Rover then booking it for assorted dash issues "under warranty" is why there's usually an initial charge. Saves the dealer spending an hour, finding the coffee then having the customer say "It's cool, I'll just take it away" and leaving them down an hour's labour.

Has the steering wheel been off centre from new?

How old is the van and how many miles has it done?

Just a standard part of their duty of care, as others have said you can't complain about about diagnosis charges later on that way if it's found not to be a warrantable matter. Someone is paying for the retailers time either the warranty or you!

Good luck getting that diagnostic fee back from them
They charged my daughter a diagnostic fee for an issue with screenwasher pump on her suzuki, i told then what the problem was when booking in, so they didnt need to do any diagnosis - ultimately after some wriggling by stonacre it was deemed a warranty repair, authorised by suzuki uk, and completed. Despite being told by suzuki to refund the diagnostic fee they have refused to do so.

I decided to just avoid them in future, but unfortunately both of our current lease cars need to use them for maintenance, at least i dont have to pay them
