I bought a registration and haven’t assigned it to my own car so the retention document is still in the previous owner’s name. Can I sell the registration on without having assigned it to my own car or do I have to first get the registration in my name before selling it? Ideally I’d like to avoid the £80 fee.

The nominee can be changed, but this should be done by the grantee (the person whose name is on the certificate).

You can, but I wouldn't be buying it from you. Personally I'd want you as the grantee at your home address, unless you'd be willing to transfer to my car before payment

You can just sell it on as it is, as long as it hasn't expired, only the certificate number is needed. It will only ever be in the original grantees name until it is assigned to another car. They are bought and sold like this all the time, I have one (V778) in somebody else's name that I haven't assigned yet. smile

And what is to stop the grantee of the registration putting on another car before you do?

ETA: Or changing the nominee.

Nothing really, but I don't have a tin foil hat.

Some sellers on ebay show the certificate number, which I've advised them not to do. It's all you need, but there'd be an audit trail no matter what happens.
