The famous VR6-engined VWs are now highly prized - so how about a less famous one?
Volkswagen knew it was on to a good thing with the VR6 engine. Compact, powerful and tuneful, it ended up in every VW Group model that would have been expected: hot Golfs, of course, the Beetle RSI, the Audi TT and so on. Plus, back when the cost of petrol and CO2 emissions weren’t quite such a concern, many cars over the years where you’d never expect to find a narrow angle V6 : think Skoda Superb, SEAT Alhambra, VW Phaeton and more.
Such was the determination to get the most from the configuration that the humble Passat received a pair of VR6 variants. Amazing to think that such a thing happened as recently as 20 years ago; these days the Passat is estate only, and PHEV only - and when did you last see one? But back in the mid-'00s, as happened with the Mk4 Golf, there was an R-badged performance flagship of the Passat plus a less powerful VR6 model in a sprawling lineup.
The R36 is sufficiently popular these days for plenty of Japanese Domestic Market Cars to have been imported. Easy to see the appeal: they look great, sound even better, and boast all the practicality of a regular Passat. Cheaper than a Golf R32, too. But this one isn’t an R36, rather it's a 3.2-litre, VR6 Passat. Yes, really: there’s the tiniest ‘V6 FSI’ badge on the boot, a pair of purposeful (yet well hidden) exhausts, and that’s your lot. To all intents and purposes this could be a nicely specced (note silver accents, clear glass, light leather) 2.0 TDI, not a Passat with the engine from a cult hero Golf.
When new, that was probably a demerit for the 3.2. There’s no arguing with the fact that the R36 was the handsomer car, one that would have probably been deemed worth paying the extra for. Those who just need a punchy Passat would have been served well enough by the 2.0 TSI. Maybe connoisseur’s choice might be pushing it a bit far for a VW estate, but you’d have to be very committed to the cause to go for the VR6. Let’s call them aficionados.
Certainly the first owner of this one loved their 3.2-litre VW, as they’ve not let anyone else have it since 2006. The upkeep has been immaculate, too: 19 main dealer services (all at the same place, no less), the DSG and Haldex serviced, four matching Bridgestones and a more modern head unit. But with the original, of course, for those that want the authentic mid-'00s experience. Aficionado might be selling them short, in truth…
Alright, so at the end of the day it is an ordinary Passat with a fairly extraordinary engine. It’s never going to have the following of its Golf cousin, and it’s always going to cost a pretty penny to run. But the VR6 always ensures some X factor, wherever it’s found, and combined with the impeccable provenance of this one the charm is plain to see. Eight grand has definitely been spent worse, that’s for sure.

It kind of limits the appeal.
There is something wonderful about an understated car with an interesting engine.
Shame there s no engine bay pictures, loads of the head unit though, and what is that large telephone keypad in front of the air vents? Never seen one of those.
