I've put this in GG to get a bit more exposure and comment to cover some questions I've seen about the latest new cars having screens across the whole dashboard including in front of the passenger.
From a US car article, in car entertainment is now having targeted adverts that pop up during driving and when using the Sat Nav, with manufacturers' sponsors being highlighted on maps and Car Play and Android Auto being restricted/not supported:

Car manufacturers are seeking greater ownership of customer experiences inside vehicles. Reducing reliance on phone-mirroring systems such as CarPlay and Android Auto allows automakers to maintain control over digital experiences, vehicle data points, and commerce flows

This to me explains all the ever growing amount of display space in cars, ready for when they get over the air updates to show ads or change the sponsors.

Has anyone experienced ads while driving, it seems Stellantis/GM vehicles are at the forefront of these intrusions.

It’s coming, it was only a matter of time.

Waze used to (not seen one in a while) put adverts up when the car was stationary. Not videos, just images, they would disappear as soon as the car started moving again.

What a st experience motoring is becoming. Between ever increasing enforcement of even the tiniest error. Cars that bing, bong and tell you what to do every second of every drive, “Assistance” software that won’t let you do anything (mandatory speed limiters will be with us in 10 years, it’s just a matter of time), subscription based options, subscription based power output.

No thanks I’m 50 next year. I will pick up a car from around 2019-2020 era and keep it until I’m in my 70s, at which point I won’t give a st anymore. Hopefully they will have self drive and I can just sit there.

I suppose it helps intersperse the reminders to renew your heated seat subscription.

Doing yourself down there, 70,s , cover yourself until your 80,s, positive outlook lol.

I am 65, and hoping to match my neighbour. I sold his last car when he was 92, and then only because cancer got him.

Wouldn't get it in with him driving mind.

Not sure if it’s happening here but a LOT of BMW owners in the US were complaining about the Spider-Man film advertisements popping up on their central screen.

Sorry, but no. If I own the car then I should be able to tell it once to fk right off and never be bothered again by ads. Unfortunately, where one manufacturer goes, the rest soon follow especially if it’s a previously untapped revenue stream so yet another reason to own an ‘old’ car.

If people with laptops can remap and change settings on cars, will we not just have an industry of car techs who will for a fee change the settings to stop all this?

Pretty sure I read BMW were also considering doing this.

Isn't this classic Internet bks? No forced advert, it just appeared as an icon if you wanted to click on it.

Imho this is why the manufacturers are pushing autonomous cars. You'd be in there subject to adverts for the entire journey!

yes but they are testing the waters.... a bit like having to pay to switch on heated seats which thankfully had an overwhelmingly negative reaction.

Recently there was some outrage over LG tv's showing ads within notification popups, they are all at it trying to squeeze whatever revenue they can.

Have any other manufacturers gone down BMWs subscription for heated seats route?

Next there will be a countdown for you to drive to a safe place and watch some adverts before proceeding....

Well, your car will be connected to the internet, so it will immediately know it has been hacked, and will probably try to install the correct software.

And the manufacturer will know it has been hacked, and void your warranty.

And since it will probably be leased the lease company will know you’ve had it hacked, and cancel your lease.

So, it’s probably not going to be that simple.

It's annoying enough having the adverts on Amazon Prime when you pause a movie and you get an add that lets you add it directly to your cart to buy, but at least you can largely ignore them.

The notion of having ads thrown in your face that you have to sit through or just can't escape from is the definition infuriating.

There are enough things on modern cars that I would considering infuriating but this tops it! As mentioned, once a car is autonomous you just get to sit there being shown adverts. Joy!

It will get worse. With the eye detectors in some vehicles, they can now make sure you are actually watching the advert and not ignoring it.
The amount of money that will be heading to manufacturers will be more than enough for them to ensure it is put in. Or you can pay a subscription to not see them.
All the shareholders win, the only loser is the user, standard ensh!ttification, seen working in all sorts of other domains.

I wonder how this will work in real life. They can't show you an advert and allow the car to move as it would effectively be like TV in the car. So you could have a couple of 30 second adverts upon start up? What if you are a taxi, delivery driver etc? What if there is insufficient 3/4/5G signal to get an advert downloaded to your car?

We took delivery of the new family bus earlier this year - a VW Multivan Hybrid. There is nothing wrong with the car per se, it is just a tool to do a job, but it did make it apparent to me that in all likelihood I will never buy another new car again. The slide towards a subscription model, nannying, 'helping' and the general taking away of control from the driver has really hit home with this one. These pop-up ads don't surprise me at all, it is a logical next step in the ensttification of cars.

In the last ten years I have bought five or six new cars, and five or six used cars, and I really feel that late 90s to early 2010s were peak car in terms of performance, safety, comfort and tech integration. I find myself fighting modern cars to get them to do what I want, rather than what they think I want. I'm sure all car technology is secretly underpinned by that bloody Microsoft paperclip!
