VW Lupo GTI | Spotted

Enough with the supercar silliness already - time for a pint sized palette cleanser

If Monterey Car Week proved one thing, it’s that you can definitely have too much of a good thing. Everybody loves a new supercar, but that enthusiasm certainly wanes after the seventh limited run of bespoke commissions. Yawn. And what, really, are you going to do with a 900hp car set up for circuit? Have the manufacturer keep it until they decide to put a track day on for you? Great.

What we need more of, and which Monterey made abundantly clear, is more accessible, uncomplicated cars. The fascination with yesteryear at the 2026 running of Car Week, from the latest debuts to the auction results, was impossible to miss. What buyers want, whether they’re spending five grand or five million, is simplicity over gimmicks, sensation over speed and authenticity instead of fads. The excitement was around the lightweight, naturally aspirated, manual stuff, and not so much the quilted leather, rose gold and atelier cars.

But even at five grand, it’s harder than ever to find a car that’s as desirable today as the day it was made - perhaps even more so - and which will continue to charm for a while yet. The obvious heroes are getting harder and harder to find in nice condition, many worn out or overpriced. Or simply no longer available, seemingly. Here’s the solution: a VW Lupo GTI. Perhaps not the most scintillating hot hatch ever made - not even VW’s best GTI, in truth - but an absolute tonic in a world saturated with silliness. A proper little usable classic, basically, something that could still bring joy everyday while also a lovely reminder of the time where small cars could be properly light and uncomplicated.

And stylish, too. The Lupo made its debut in the last century, and went off sale more than 20 years ago (to be replaced by the dreary Fox), yet still looks fresh to this day. Especially with the GTI goodies: the wheels, badges and centre-exit exhaust set just the right tone. An Up GTI was cute; a Lupo GTI is still cool, and that makes a difference.

This one is a recent import from Japan, which is why it’s cheaper than we normally see GTIs advertised at. It hasn’t been here long, with its first MOT earlier in 2026, and the pics of the underside are encouraging - the condition does look great. The downside is that the seller says there’s only ‘some’ service history, and only a few clever folk in the UK will understand it.

That being said, it’s hardly like importing a Passat W8 or something. Lupos are fundamentally simple machines, and you’d have to hope they're still quite cheap to fix. Japanese Domestic Market machines are typically cared for extremely well, and that MOT from March was advisory free. 92k seems a reasonable amount of miles. For the price of some contrast embroidery on a Brabus, a Lupo GTI looks like just what the doctor ordered after a supercar binge.

980kg and famously had aluminium front wings, bonnet and doors, bespoke to the GTI (maybe 3L, too?). Definitely a 'Ferdinand Piech' car, engineering coming before cost.

I find this article so much more interesting than Liberace's new Spyker article...

Easy to translate Japanese history these days. Just take a photo and put it through Google.

Recently did that with 20 years worth on my Civic. The translation isn’t perfect, but you get the jist.

I’ve not opened a single one of the flood of super car articles. Never going to be able to afford one (like 99% of folk on here), so what’s the point.

Lovely little thing. Will be mega fun and £6k for it doesn’t feel bad, being fair.

Like this and it looks a decent price for what will be a fun car.

Way more interesting to me than all of the stuff rom Monterey

I did not knew that (or forgot...) sounds great, also looks like a well made small-ish daily fun/to work car?

no idea how those drive though, not driven these more modern super mini's, I'm more from the older time line with those ala Peugeot 205 GTI variants, but I guess those Lupo GTI are more solid, but that could cost a bit pureness? who can tell me smile

Gosh, it would be a great daily for the work commute. You’d get out with a big grin every morning

I still vaguely recall a Lupo GTI Spotted article on a black one a year or so ago.

Regardless, a great car. Owned one for three years. Looking back it was a mistake to replace it with a new A1 but it felt like a good idea at the time.

Great headlights. Felt like I was driving a tiny Golf. As I think I've mentioned before, also great for parking on the shortest-of-short single yellows in town, unless I was beaten to it by a smart car or Foxtons mini!

Even with the Japanese imports it is a small club to be a part of, particularly if you are the owner of one of five or ten 05/55 plate run-out GTIs finished the Golf V's Laser Blue

Just to add a few, magnesium rear hatch, completely different front lights and bumper design (though look similar to other Lupos), completely different dashboard design, magnesium wheels, wider wheel arches, wider front and rear axles...

Quite impressive the Up! GTI without any of those things is a similar weight!

Just a tad too small IMHO. More of a Polo man when buying something sensible though the latest is basically Golf sized.

Very true, but the Lupo has a 1.6L 4-pot, the Up! GTI a turbocharged three cylinder and over a decades worth of progress everywhere else.

I do remember the Lupo GTI being quite expensive when new, over 20% more than a 1.4 16v Sport 100hp, so no surprise it's such a rare bird now and whatever you do, don't damage those lightweight panels, probably £££, if still available.

Here's a nice/amusing little story. I recall seeing a Blk VW Lupo GTi driven by an attractive lady at my local supermarket. Saw her a couple of times and even identified where she lived. I wrote her a poem which included mention of the Lupo (might of actually been 'loopy about you') and planned to leave it on her windscreen with my mobile number. The poem was placed in my glovebox in prep for the next supermarket sighting. I then had an unfortunate off the road excursion. The car was considered a write off and the poem was in the glovebox! The car (Ibiza Cupra 20v Turbo) did somehow find itself back on the road, but suspect the poem never got used! Pleased to say I've long been happily married and didn't meet her in a supermarket.

Maybe I'm strange, but i get such a buzz when reading articles like this then the latest super/hyper cars.

I'm genuinely more excited by the Corsa GSE and ID Polo GTi than the latest wannbe F1 hypercar

A GTI in Raven Blue would have been £14650 when new. At least the one I fawned over in my local dealer was. Then another grand for air con and the same again for leather. And those were the only options. I can't recall if the paint colour affected price.

was my first 'nice' car, xenons when it was rare for any cars to have them, alu panels etc (every single one was diff from the standard lupo) very expensive at the time

I had one with heated leather seats and a private plate from the vw press department

the only thing I didnt like was the suspension standard was very wallowy

Had two of these over the years and they were both hilarious - preferred my first one (2001) with the 5 speed box and cloth seats (X232MAP where are you?), rather than the 2003 I had with the 6 speed box and leather.... but they were pocket sized grown up cars.

My first car with Xenons they were strong enough to be blinding rabbits in their burrows - and it was when VW could build great quality simple interiors

One of those cars that whenever i see another for sale I think.. 'shall I?' And having seen the prices asked for some that looks like a decent buy, import or not, think Mrs T will be glad it's just a little too far away for me......
