Timewarp, Panda-clone Marbella has us at hello
What better way of protesting modern car bloat than buying a papiermaché Seat from 1993?

The Seat what now? Yes, the Marbella: last vestige of the manufacturer’s long-running relationship with Fiat and oft-forgotten sibling to the Panda, which it resembles from every possible angle, save a close-up of the badge. The Italian-made car, of course, is hugely famous for combining Giorgetto Giugiaro’s sawn-off design with wilfully utilitarian running gear. It was meant as a practical car without pretence, in Fiat’s finest tradition. Two months after its reveal, the firm had apparently received 70,000 orders.
Those really were the days. Of course, that was 1980; by 1993, when our hero emerged from the Zona Franca plant, the market had moved on somewhat - but Seat hadn’t: it soldiered on with the rebranded Marbella till 1998. This seems remarkable now, especially given the firm’s relationship with Fiat came to an end in 1982, which meant that the Marbella did not receive the mechanical updates that even the Panda was treated to in 1986.
Which means that if you’re looking for an ode to old-school simplicity (and who isn’t these days), you could hardly do better than a car which is said to be original save for an updated stereo. This is presumably its heaviest component, save for the 903cc - or possibly 899cc - 100 series engine, which traces its genesis back to 1955, and might just be good enough for 80mph. Assuming the dog you keep in the footwell is similarly lightweight.

Naturally, it is the palpable lack of mass (and tosses) that makes the Marbella appealing now. Anyone expecting Cinquecento Sporting-style sparkle will come away disappointed; the performance here will be modest with a capital M. But it will be honest and cheery and as insulated from the road surface as an empty biscuit tin. If you’re looking for a car to make urban commuting seem like fun, there might be none better.
Obviously it helps that this example looks pleasingly straight and understressed. In three decades, the Marbella has only covered 48k - though the MOT record (which is now advisory-free in its latest issue) suggests gentle use rather than complete hibernation. Earlier issues speak to old-car admin rather than untold horror story: think worn discs, cracked or perished tyres, a minor exhaust leak, and slightly worn front shock bushes.
That doesn’t mean it won’t need TLC - it will. And at £3,995, it’s no shed-like bargain either, or a secret driver’s car. But it is another survivor of a near-forgotten age, when superminis were built with practically no airs and graces. Giugiaro said he wanted the Panda to be like a pair of jeans; i.e. functional, and suitable anywhere. That made the car cool in 1980, and we’d venture that in its own downsized, dinky way, it is even cooler now. But we might be wrong. Let’s see if it’s still for sale 14 days hence.

Wonder how hard it would be to swap in the 4x4 from a poorer nick Panda.

Its got a certain 1990s Greek rental car chic going on but they had zero cred back when new, an off brand Panda, when the actual Panda was not very desirable, I know people witter on about them now but the done *have* to drive it now, these were miserable contraptions to those that had them by and large, when a MK3 Escort seems like pure luxury you know its a bit s

Equally as annoying as that is the fact the author says it's identical to a Panda. Which I suppose it is, if you don't count the completely different front end treatment, And rear lights.
