BMW M special editions mark 'ring centenary
100 years of the Nürburgring celebrated with nine new BMW cars and bikes - best like green...
There were already plenty of special editions paying homage to the history of the Nurburgring and various achievements on it. Now, with perhaps the world’s most famous racetrack set to mark its 100th anniversary next year, we can expect a whole load more. The opportunity is irresistible: the biggest of big birthdays, a chance to talk about the track’s influence on road car development, a circuit layout that makes a great badge, and a ‘Green Hell’ nickname for the paint choice. They almost make themselves.
What you’re looking at here are the 100 Jahre Nurburgring Editions from BMW M and BMW Motorrad. There will be nine specials in total, though we’ll focus on the six M cars: M2, M3, M3 Touring, M4, M5, M5 Touring. All will have Nurburgring Green available (one dab for the bingo card), the wheels also appear to be green as well, and all feature ‘Nurburgring since 1927’ and the silhouette of the circuit in the exterior makeover (second dab).
There’s more than just the obvious, promise. Note stripes across carbon and steel roofs, even more green on the frames of the kidney grilles (seriously) and new ‘100 Years’ logos. You’re going to be Touristenfahrten royalty with one of these, surely. (Black Sapphire is on offer for those who don’t want Nurburgring Green).
All of the six-cylinder cars make use of the new M Ignite technology that ensures Euro 7 compliance. For the M2 100 Jahre Nurburgring, the special edition gets the whole lot: carbon roof, carbon seats, the paint and the graphics. In case the M2 wasn’t attention-grabbing enough. If the images are anything to go by, it seems like there might be such a thing as a manual M2 Nurburgring, which sounds quite collectable, though exact availability is unconfirmed for the moment. No additional power is coming from the 480hp 3.0-litre S58.
Those who do require more power from their 100 Jahre M car have plenty more to choose from. BMW suggests that the 530hp M3 Nurburgring ‘combines everyday usability, precision, and racetrack competence.’ It gets the green accents on the wheels - maybe save them for track wheels and get others - plus the graphics package. Ditto the Touring, in fact, just with a steel rather than carbon roof. You’re noticing the theme. The M4 ‘sets a particularly sporty focus’ with accents, stripes and so on.
Arguably the interior overhaul is of most interest, the green and white stitching a nice contrast against the black. There’s an Alcantara wheel for the straight-six machines with the Nurburgring colours found at 12 o’clock. As for the V8 hybrid M5s, it very much sticks to the script inside and out: green highlights for Style 951M wheels on the saloon, black Nurburgring embroidery, stripes and circuit insignia. For anyone who really loves the track and modern M cars (there’ll be even more than you think), these 100 Jahre Nurburgring machines are surely going to be popular.
M CEO Frank van Meel said: “The Nürburgring is much more than just a racetrack for us – it is a second home for BMW M. All our production vehicles are put through their paces on the Nordschleife. With the Edition 100 Jahre Nürburgring, we celebrate our long-standing and successful relationship with the Nürburgring.” There’s your full house of Nurburgring special edition bingo, ladies and gents.
What the Nurburgring Edition cars will cost isn’t clear for the moment. There's no confirmation of availability either, though we're a big market for the UK, and even with the green wheel accents it’s easy to imagine a few finding good homes. Or, if Nurburgring Green is a bit much, how about Boston? Suits an M3 Touring down to the ground…

But more notably a roll of tape for pin-stripes, replacement wheel trims, tacky spoilers, louvres for rear windows, better stereos, massive speakers and so on.
Nowadays they don't seem to do that sort of stuff but I suppose the phrase just stuck.
Anyway while I love Nurburging Green even if I'd much rather have silver wheels. Love the manual box in the M2 (all 8 of my BMWs have been manual) but M cars do seem bloated these days.
