MY27 Grenadier lineup earns Helmsman edition

All hands to the tiller - Ineos is offering a new limited edition

The Ineos Grenadier was always intended to evoke the spirit of the Land Rover Defender, and to a large extent it has: tolerable on road, though never happier than when forging its own path off the beaten track. Now the tribute act is going one step further, with the first of ‘several’ new editions coming to the Ineos range. Whether classic or current, the Defender has never been without a special or two, so the Grenadier will do much the same. Say hello to the Helmsman Edition.

Yes, really. It’s the first of a few that will be ‘inspired by the adventurous spirit of the Grenadier and the elements it was designed to tackle’; the car has proven itself adept in nautical environments - the RNLI uses them, no less - and so here we have the Helmsman. It might have some unfortunate connotations with those whose faith in their driving ability is at odds with reality, but the origins are of course in sailing. So Ineos Grenadier Helmsman Edition it is.

The colour is notable here, with Whiteout Blue only previously offered on Arcane Works builds (we’re still waiting on the V8, guys). Eldoret Blue and Scottish White are also offered, with black or white contrast roofs optional. Whichever colour combo is chosen, all Helmsmans are fitted with a Dark Exterior Pack, privacy glass, 17-inch diamond cut wheels and something called a Smooth Pack, which adds front parking sensors (handy given how the bonnet protrudes), ambient lighting and auxiliary electrical points.

Buyers can have their Helmsman as a Station Wagon or a Quartermaster truck, with prices from £70,995 - actually a grand less than the existing Trialmasters and Fieldmasters. But don’t wait too long, as there’s a ‘limited production window’ ahead of the next one. Answers on a postcard for that one - something safari-grade seems like an obvious contender. Sagree Sardien, Ineos Automotive Global Sales Director, said of the Helmsman: “Built to work hard and play even harder, the Grenadier is in its element when recovering a boat or transporting kayaks to the coast. With this in mind, we have combined popular design features from previous limited editions with new oceanic hues to deliver the ideal 4X4 for watersports enthusiasts and seafarers. After three quarters of double-digit growth, it’s clear that our model line-up evolution is focussed on bringing new customers to the brand who share our spirit of adventure.”

Due to inflation on the rest of the non EV car market, do these start to look good value now?

I really like these.

Could be a great long termer. Keep it for 15 years or so.

I thought all Ineos Grenadiers were limited edition models. They only sell a couple of hundred vehicles per year in the UK.

Aren't these the same colour as Ineos supply to the RNLI? If so, appropriate name.

Are they naming these things solely to provide hacks with terrible puns? "Earns"? What kind of writing is this? It certainly suggests the 'swallowed a dictionary' style AI churns out.

Looks good to me in that colour. Although I still think mine would be off white with steelies.

That was my though, and my cynical brain immediately jumped to them launching (sorry) this version to shore up (again, sorry) the future values of all vehicles painted this colour.

Why? becuase the RNLI probably got a screamer of a lease deal on them, they were, until now, clearly identifiable in that shade of blue and, knowing they'd spent much of their working lives on beaches and in salt water & air, most dealers/ buyers would keep a wide berth (sorry, these just keep coming) of ex-RNLI fodder.

By releasing these they may just sufficiently muddy the waters (oh God, another one, listen, I am seriously sorry folks) on the second hand market and retain some additional value on what will be eventually ex-RNLI stock, which benefits INEOS.

So if you really harbour (ok, that one is intentional, I'm all in now) a desire for a blue one in a few years, check carefully.

Looks like quite a handsome beast. I think if I ever saw one out in the wild, I’d just assume it was a Land Rover.

Apparently, it is a different colour to the RNLI ones - they're Britannia Blue.

9,600 deliveries last year (against an initial target of 25k) - and that's after the Trumpton Tariffs. It's so painful for Ineos they're actually talking about moving production to the US - it's their biggest market by a fair margin i think.

"Earns" seems to have become PH's new "Behold"

Earning infers making an effort in exchange for some sort of reward. It makes no sense in the context of the headline.

Anyway, as you were...

LC250 is about £80k
D110 starts at about £70k
High spec double cab pickups (that nobody buys any more cause of the closed BIK loophole) are £50-60k incl VAT.

Spec one of these with diff locks and safari windows and it's about £72k I think

I agree they seem to sell a few in the US, but I was talking about UK sales. According to How rare is my car they sold 1,439 in 2023, 591 in 2024, 535 in 2025 and 186 so far this year.

How's about a special 'Radcliffe' edition. It's USP being loads of cubby holes to hide stuff in. It could also be painted BRG to pretend it has skin in the UK game and a DPF delete so the driver can choke plebs while living in air-conditioned luxury. Oh! And a loud hailer so they can be heard ranting from afar. soapbox

I really want one but have no real need for one. The turning circle and the fuel consumption would be a pain in the arse but when you can spend £30k on a good condition proper land cruiser that's 20 years old paying double that for a virtually new Grenadier doesn't seem so crazy.
