Our three car car garage will soon become four, two of which really should be under cover, but our house only has a single garage...

I have a dream of building a big 5 bay coach house type thing at the end of the garden, but a chimney, septic tank drainage field, and the existing garage or front currently make access challenging, so not sure that's really viable... Maybe long term?!

My experience of car storage in the past has been limited to renting a garage from the council for relative buttons, but now thinking of trying to find either a nice bespoke storage place (probably expensive) or at the other end of the scale, a friendly farmer etc who might have an empty barn.

Absolutely no idea on costs at either, not whether having a car or two stashed away remotely just translates into never using it!

For what it's worth, it would need to be in the vicinity of Stansted airport which I expect elevates prices/demand in itself!

Any experience/pointers??

Actual secure, dry storage is £100 - 120 per month in my area. £120 gets you storage with power for a trickle charger. The ‘council’ garages here are managed by a third party who are a PITA to deal with; the garages themselves are en-bloc with doors you could open in 5 seconds with basic tools.

Upto £200pcm per car isn't uncommon for a professional car storage operator.

Interesting. I was thinking it might be circa £100 a month - guess it depends how fancy an outfit it is over and above a mouse ridden barn!

If you want fancy storage near Stansted then Hilton & Moss have storage facility on site

Full climate control and vehicle on charger under dust cover...but it's around £350 per month

BIG business down south..

200 just about gets you into warm, dry facility thats manned all the time with some leccy, i have 2 in this type of facility and then 2 in here, which is very cool but 350-400 mth as its near the airport i fly in to, to get them.

Watching them move them around is quite cool

I have others in one of the Motorworld facilities in Germany, which is even cooler, as theyre in glass cabinets similar to a museum smile something very satisfying about just walking through inconspicuously with the general public looking at your own cars in the museum smile in fact, Schmee did one of his videos earlier this year and a mate (who watches him) pointed out one of my cars was in his video, quite funny as they commented on it being a rhd english car.. wOooOoo claim to fame! rofl

For me it gives much more piece of mind to pay for storage, knowing theyre looked after, charged etc, the cars stored more expensively are appreciating faster than the storage costs anyway so the costs dont both me too much.

£100 a month gets you a standard single garage in the area I live, or an outdoor parking space within a couple minutes of the city centre.

I did try to rent a council garage unit around 6 years ago, as far as I know i'm still on a waiting list but i've given up on it really.

Is it worth it. Will probably put you off ever going there to drive them. Maybe just sell…

I know of Hilton and Moss and it's a swanky looking outfit, but the cars are not in the realm of £350/month storage value!

Very cool - and the novelty of that as a bit of garaging is definitely of some value! I did see Harry Metcalfe had put his f type in storage in Nice for the season - something very appealing of having your own car stashed away somewhere sunny for impromptu jaunts, but my reality is not quite there!

I pay £165 including trickle charging, cover and monthly run up to temperature. Crucially it’s someone I trust to look after it like his own car.

I remember when Council garages were under £10 a month, had 2 of them for years. A local TVR nut had 4 or 5 of them in a block.

I still do spaces at £100/ month but 100 miles from Stansted, well 100.7 to be exact from the airport!

Basic barn storage, shove a cover over it & leave it ideally years type. I'm in & out the swanky places for work & yes they're a lot more! Are some halfway houses tho, like one near me, barn type but very good security & dry & lots if decent stuff in storage & they start at £150pcm (W Berks)

Back in 2012 I rented a lock-up from the local council in Berkshire for £47 a month.

It was totally insecure - the only thing of any real value got nicked within a month. It leaked like a sieve, but thankfully I had already put everything on pallets!

Waste of money really. A car is normally designed to function outdoors so why not leave it outdoors?

No connection nor idea on costs, but Colne Car Storage is about 40 mins from Stansted: https://www.colnecarstorage.com/car-storage

The former Centre Principal at Porsche Colchester is their Ops Manager, which is how I became aware of it.

I have no experience of them but an acquaintance has and he speaks very highly of them. No idea of cost but the website suggests competence and knowledge, so probably priced accordingly.
