SOTW: Xsara VTS
Citroen Xsara VTS £1,950
This has to be a bargain. Shed of the week finds itself severely tempted by this flat-lager coloured example of when Citroens were exceedingly dull to look at (certainly compared with their forbears) but extremely fun to drive. Unlike much that has come along since.
In effect, what you’re looking at here is a cut-price way to get into a revered Peugeot 306 GTi 6. That may be a little bit harsh to hear for Citroen fans out there, but put simply, the VTS has never enjoyed the sales, status or residuals values of its illustrious twin.
What is does have, is the same cracking 167bhp four-pot complete with a classically deft and adjustable French chassis. The former provides plenty of thrills in a car that weighs a good deal less than a current family hatchback, with a wonderfully pure sound track and superb response – albeit connected to a five speed gearbox here, unlike the Peugeot.
As for the chassis, it never quite won the praise lavished on the Pug, and neither quite did the steering, with reports of the time commenting in particular on its strong turn-in oversteer when driven hard on a track. Could be a lot of fun, now we come to think of it...
Make no mistake though; the VTS should still be a sparkling and hugely entertaining drive. You’re buying this car for the thrills behind the wheel, not the style statement you’re going to make. The fact that you’ll also get a spacious and reasonably economical to run hatchback thrown into the deal as well is purely a bonus. The hot hatch recipe is as relevant today as it’s ever been.
This car in particular looks a good deal - making a mockery of the term 'shed'. It’s nearly a decade old, but the mileage is very low, and it appears to be in original condition too – free from lowering springs, big speakers and neon lights
After all, ask yourself this: what would you rather punt over a decent B road – this Xsara VTS or a brand new C4 VTS. We know which seat we’d rather be sat in…

Biggest problem is having a car with such an incredibly lousy name.
And the neighbours would hate my housemate and me having 2 overly bright cars on the driveway (he's got a burnt orange Leon VT)
A shed surely is a TR8 with 2 months MOT and no hope of passing the next one, or a Volvo estate with leather and air for £300, or that Merc S class with the roof chopped off in the classifieds... this one:

So come on, how about "shed of the week" going back to its roots?
I'm sure i spotted an A-team looky likey van for a few hundred squid...

though I agree, £1000 and not a penny more should be the rule.

£2k can buy far more than a nasty yellow/gold french box! If it must be french then how about the Xantia V6 for 995 on autotrader, or the Merc 300e 24 valve on ebay that often sell for £600. Surely a 'shed' on Piston Heads constitutes a car which still has good performance (140mph & approx 7 secs to 60mph) for approx £500-£1000. A 205 GTi Mi16 for £1500, or a Fiat Coupe 20VT for £1200! Or even a Volvo 850 T5 for £800 on autotrader. An Audi 80 2.8 V6 is also a hidden bargain. BMW 535i's, even some e36 328i's are appearing at around 1k (definite bargain performance motoring providing the Nikisil issues have been rectified). This section is aimed at the student/scumball sector of the market, where maximum performance for minimal beer tokens can be found. Lets see an improvement please....
Hunt about and there are 306 GTi-6's out there for that kind of wedge. 10 times the car.
only 1 1/2 times the car. They are very similar to drive, plus the xsara gearbox tends to be more robust.306 is still a better car, but only by a small margin
