Why is it that when the approach to a major a roadworks (Beddingham, A27, East Sussex) is clearly signed with multiple sets of HUGE signs that say, "WHEN QUEUING USE BOTH LANES" and similarly HUGE signs that say, "MERGE IN TURN", do you still get twunts that go to special lengths to make sure that, "I was here first, you're not getting past me"?
When asked if he has seen the signs his response was "get in the queue like everyone else".
Sheep! Mindless feckin' sheep! "I don't care what the signs say, I'm going to sit in the queue a mile too early".
With that kind of mentality behind the wheel is there ANY hope left for this country?

I generally pull over in time so I don't end up hung out in the lane which is blocked and there is still a chance to merge into the queueing traffic without offending anyone else - this tends to be between 3 and 400 meters (on average) away. There is always some arse who just barges his way in after that, pissing other people off.
This is one of the key problems on UK roads today - people aren't polite and considerate enough for other people. These idiots who try to barge their way in at the last minute are not actually getting much further, but causing greater stress to an already unpleasant situation.

Which part of "use both lanes when queueing" and "merge in turn" causes the comprehension problem?
You have 2 lanes of traffic. Drivers should approach in either lane 1 or lane 2, and when they get to the point of the lanes merging into one, then they should alternate a driver from lane 1, a driver from lane 2 and so on.... If you want to get into lane 1 400m early, be my guest, but don't complain about other motorists just obeying the huge big signs that govern the roadworks.

In the land of the grown ups you are taught the 'zipper method' this tells you to use all the road (it's what it was designed for) and merge in turn like a zipper, this ensures
1. all the road is used,
2. there is no confusion
3. the traffic flows evenly.
It's only a problem in this country where everyone sees other drivers as a threat to their masculinity or have a small minded playground mentality
TBF, if the signs say "USE BOTH LANES, MERGE IN TURN", then fair enough. But usually there are no signs like that. And anyway, even if there are signs like that, where do they say "USE BOTH LANES, MERGE IN TURN, BY HOOFING IT UP THE OUTSIDE AT SPEED THEN AGGRESSIVELY CUTTING IN AT THE LAST MOMENT". Sensible folks will start to merge sooner rather than later, so a nice smooth clean moving line gets through the pinch point, if the actual zipper is right at the coned off lane closure, it all goes to rat and seizes up anyway.

Warren the "BY HOOFING IT UP THE OUTSIDE AT SPEED THEN AGGRESSIVELY CUTTING IN AT THE LAST MOMENT" is brought about because people have merged early and the whole plot has ground to a halt so you might as well drive to the end than by half arsedly trying to find someone to open a gap for you. I admit the highway code is ambiguous and unhelpful about this as it really needs revising. As I said before this is not a problem anywhere else I've driven because it is clearly defined in their version of the HWC I interpret MERGE IN TURN as both lanes doing this up to the pinch point, like a zip, and so traffic keeps moving, yes, doing it too early screws it all up, but I dont think it means 1-2-1-2-1-2 right at the pinch point either, as lane 1 then has to slow or even stop dead for lane 2 to actually move off from stationary to merge in. Much better to create the gaps in advance for lane 2 to merge, and it still moves smoothly. But when you do that, for every lane 2 car that accepts the gap and merges in turn in front of you, another lane 2 will refuse, and carry on to the very end, then the only way lane 2 can get in, is if lane 1 stops for them. Naturally, lane 1 is reluctant to do this, and I dont think that is ignoring the principle of MERGE IN TURN.

My point exactly - I pull in as the traffic starts to slow, and I'd be getting up the nose of already stressed motorists if I attempted to pull in sooner. Also, as you correctly say, I've very rarely seen a "Merge in turn" sign - although I suggest most people wouldn't know what that meant anyway...
I don't condone sitting in traffic for ages, and won't look to pull over too soon (as many people do), but I'm not going to piss off other people who have as much right to use the road as I do by staying in the outside lane too long.
This subject used to irate me. I used to think why oh why are people merging early, then i gave up. Now you get people who pop out of qeue by about half a cars width so you cant pass them. When you drive over the bit of rough ground or go on to a kerb they wave fists etc.
Now I tend to pull up behind the people that stick there cars out fake like im going around them on the dirt/kerb then as they pull out more to block tuck in to there place. Leaves them out in the outside lane cursing like a trooper. cheers me right up.

I think you've highlighted the problem, there is no hard and fast rule in the HWC for this like there is in Germany and the zipper method has become the norm everywhere, it works very well too and promotes good manners. To be honest I do as you do simply to avoid the territorial or aggressive drivers
If there were no 'Use both lanes when queueing' and 'Merge in turn' signs, it'd be slightly different. But there's a reason they do this. The length of dual carriageway between the roundabouts is fairly short and given the length of tailbacks that it's known to cause, they're trying to PREVENT the traffic queueing all the way back to the previous roundabout and blocking that too.
I just get evils for doing what the signs TELL me to do and to prevent queues building up too far back. And no, I don't drive a BMW. My car's in my profile. It has working indicators an' everyfing.
ETA: I think there's a distinct difference between 'merging in turn' and 'driving fast right to the lane closure and then shoving in'. When merging, I'll merge maybe 50-100ft before the lane starts to close. There are still t
ts driving right up into the cones trying to shove their way in as far as possible. That's a whole different attitude and boils my piss. It's also the behaviour that causes 'merging in turn' not to work so smoothly.

So actually, we're all in agreement then.
