SOTW: Lexus V8

Waft about like you own the place for less than a DFS sofa.

Posh Toyota. That's what we all thought when the Lexus brand was launched upon us in the early 90's. Who would have thought we'd actually want one. Not me for one, but turned out the LS was a great car, so great that it was compared to the S Class Benz.

Underneath the hood was a 4.0 V8 producing 250bhp mated to a smooth auto and loaded with more kit than Dixons, no really, you just couldn't fit in any more features. Gold plated badges? Not a problem sir, just tick this box. This car had luxury not seen before, and on the test drive you could be forgiven for trying to start the already running engine as tickover was near silent.

Nowadays Lexus has grown into a brand to aspire to, but the early LS has suffered a little bit. These days you're more likely to see one outside your local Ritzy nightclub waiting to carry you and your drunken mates home rather than outside the Ritz waiting for the CEO to finish a power lunch.

That doesn't mean it's a bad car, oh no. These old barges go on for ever and usually all the toys continue to work too. They still waft you around in quiet comfort and to those who know- it still has some class.

£850- not a lot in anyone's book. But that price buys you this 1992 LS. It's done 195,000 miles but had full history up to 179,000. It has every option known to man, is taxed until Feb next year and the V8 is, according to the seller, mechanically excellent. The MOT has expired though, so make of that what you will.

Advert Says:

1992 Lexus LS 4.0 V8 4dr Auto Saloon.

Automatic, 195,000 miles, M/Silver, Auto, E/W, E/M, E/S/R, E Seats, C/L, PAS, A/C, Cruise, Fully Loaded, Tax-02/08, Blue Leather, FSH up to 179K, 250BHP V8, Mechanically Excellent, VGC For Year. MOT Just Expired, Still Excellent Runner, Beauty. £850. ono

Ah, the old "...mechanically excellent." Not quite excellent enough to spend £50 putting it through its MOT then?

I'm still tempted though, it could make the basis of an excellent Le Mans taxi!

You can buy my green one for that price, it has a few more miles on it (225,000), full history, six months MOT and tax. I've had it two years, wonderful bit of kit, just a bit too big for the mrs to drive so we're getting a Soarer with the same running gear. Can't beat that Lexus V8!

So much car for so little money.

The lack of MOT is telling though, if it was economical to do then the current owner would have done it, no?

Discs are not that cheap but still far from expensive, pads - fronts are £17, rears <£20

hardly breaking the bank.

Stop this now! That car is 850 times better than going to work on the bus every day.

Read between the lines.....

"Mechanically excellent" usually suggests that the engine/gearbox are in good nick, but the MOT test doesn't have much interest in those....

You can source many expensive (in the UK) suspension components (upper control arms etc) easily from the States. They pay in dollars what we pay in pounds which shows how much we are ripped off for genuine Lexus parts here in the UK.

Or alternatively try here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

Also OEM discs and pads are not prohibitive either - if you want genuine you can sometimes buy from Toyota at a lower price as well.

Wouldn't touch one without an MOT though ....

That v8 is absolutly bomb proof! Fantastically robust engine, these are alot of car for the money. If your after a big silly waftmobile for £1k it doesn't get any better than this. Brilliant car (My dads had 420k miles before he sold it, still very solid)

Nice, engine bay looks clean. I'd want to whack some alloys on it.

yikes its the millenuim falcon on wheels!!

A mate had one for a while.. Was rather err square but super silent and for the performance was pretty economical. (well compared to his previous Jag XJ anyway! biggrin )

Yeah but i wonder what parts are gonna be like for that little monster... Cars these days seem to have more and more 'black boxes'
