ST 220 all day long.

Only possible criticisms I had were - slightly weak temp control on the a/c and smallish fuel tank (55ltr from memory).

I haven't driven either so my opinion means nothing! But out of those two I'd have the Mondeo everytime...

Can we pick a 3rd option? Neither really floats m' gondola a great deal but IMO i'd go with the Jag.

ST is a little quicker top speed but the Jag has marginally better 0-60..Apparently.

The mondeo is a very good car but is just too anonymous and sterile for me.

The X-Type gets lots of stereotypes thrown at it but the 3.0 v6 is a good car.. and better than alot of people would lead you to believe IMO..

Ultimately the test drive will answer you're woes. Be interesting what you pick.

The ST's always been given cracking reviews, and I loved the previous generation Mondeo's handling. I suspect, although I can't say for sure, that pound for pound the Mondeo will give you more metal for your money.

I`m afraid the x types awd lets it down a little.

Too much loss through the drive train, although two friends have got both,x type driver swears

220 can`t catch him above 100 leptons.

With the massive tax rises due for the V6 X-Types they're practically giving these cars away at the moment.

I think they're better value and spec than the Mondeo.

Interesting Q. I almost just said Mondeo but thinking about it the Jag would possibly be a better Q car and debaged no-one would expect it to be as quick as the mondeo and I am sure it is. Also don't they do a 4x4 version of the jaguar?

They do have a 4wd version of the Jaguar - all 2.5`s and 3.0`s are AWD.

ST220 would be where my money goes. The Jag is just a glorified Mondeo IMHO.

Been in both? They're a very different drive to say they're so similar mechanically.

I bet an ST220 would be more expensive too.

I used to work for a vehicle leasing company that held a contract with Jaguar (Ford), so have driven pretty much all variants of X-Type and Mondeo as these were on the fleet and at my disposal as a company car. Very different drive yes but somehow the ST220 always felt more "together" in my opinion. The manual 3.0 X-Type is bloody good but not good enough for me to take one.

I always thouught that the Jag version of the engine had different heads to the Mondeo lump.

yes And a heavier flywheel so the engine doesnt rev up as quick. I would go ST220, should be more sporty.

Go with the ST220 a much nicer car, and like you said people will always tar the X Type with the "it's just a Mondeo" brush... so you might as aswell have the Mondeo so at least people will say " it's the same as a Jaguar".... i know that my input is not very constuctive but on a constructive note a mate of mine has the ST220 and it really is a very nice car.

About the only thing the Jag version of the engine shares with the Ford is the cylinder block.
The Jags ports flow better, it has direct acting mechanical buckets- better for higher revs also while the multi stage intake manifold combined with the VCT gives a nice broad torque curve.

There is some driveline shunt and shuffle due to the 4WD but you've have to be super perceptive to notice it, as alot of effort was spent calibrating it out. I wouldnt trade this for the torque steer (although minimal in the Mondeo) you'd get in the ST220-which you dont get in the X type.

I did, while I was in school for auto mechanics & diesel, I took Ford factory training there as well. Moved on to Orlando, FL for my Jaguar factory training, ended up at the Colorado Springs Land Rover/ Jaguar dealership out of school, but they didn't hold up their end of the agreement. I now live on the western side of the Rockies (still in Colorado) & work on Fords..........Very much a love/hate relationship.

Edit to say Hi Marquis....How is Germany treating you, hope things are great..wavey

driven both and the x-type 2.5 sport alot. i'd go for the mondeo (having owned one), you will find the fuel consumption better, the mondeo slightly better at being chucked around, and recaro seats are fab. but imho the jag is a better space to spend time in especially if its got lots of kit. imho the engine in the 3.0L x-type is nicer, as already stated the x-type unit has a broad range of torque and sings a lovely tune right up to the red line. the mondeo sounds nice also.. mondeo is much more practical but the x-type is a better size for everyday driving around town.
