Lean Cupra vs Audi A3 Sport Quattro 1.8T vs Golf V6 4Motion
Discussion
A budget of 3-4k buys:
80k 2001 Leon Cupra £3200 150bhp:
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/SEAT...
75k 2000 Audi A3 1.8T Sport Quattro £3495 180bhp:
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/AUDI...
83k 2000 Golf V6 4Motion £3895 ~200bhp?:
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLK...
Now these are all very similar having the same floor pan etc. Could any be considered "drivers cars" as standard? To my mind (polluted by advertising) the Leon Cupra will be most focussed but slowest and the Golf fastest, best bargain but a bit soft round the edges.
Which would be most fun round a track as standard?
I can't stretch to an S3, cupra R or golf R32 but my pick of those would probably be the S3.
On a similar theme but a more level playign field - out of the Leon Cupra, Golf GTI and A3 sport (non quattro) is one of them more of a focussed drivers car or better than the others?

Owned a Cupra and recently bought a Golf V6 4Motion.
For quality, refinement etc the Golf is vastly better than the Seat, Seat in standard trim is more fun to drive though.
Economy wise, I am getting 28-29mpg from the Golf, the Seat was about the same.
The Golf seems expensive. I paid £2700 for mine, 2001 model, 70k on the clock, FSH, beige leather, upgraded factory stereo and cruise, bodywork was totally unmarked. Fitted a Milltek exhaust and sorted the wallowy standard suspension with a full Bilstein kit and it now sounds wonderful and is genuinely good fun to drive.

The audi or golf IMO
Miss is as good as mile. The Germans ride like they have got friction issues in their suspension. The Seat is the only drivers car out of the box. See the chap that had to sort the Golfs Suspension with aftermarket kit.
You'll get more car / spec for your money. It might not even have been to moon and back mileage wise...
I'd not go for any really if you want a fun drivers car.
The 1.8T engine is about as dull as it comes for pedalling along hard... and the Golf 4Motion V6 isn't really spectacular, too much a cruiser really... it does sound nice though.
Have you considered an old shape Civic Type R at all? It'll be much more fun if you are buying a car/hatch for being 'hot'

If you are looking for a drivers car, why are you looking at VW's?
Vws are good for when you want a nice cruiser that can swallow big miles in comfort, that's built well, but will neither be very exciting or very fast,
Your budget could put you in an M3 (E36 shape), Alfa GTV V6, Fast Subaru.., all being more entertaining and a good deal faster

I'm coming from a Corrado VR6, want a "sports car" feel but dont want to lose the practicality. I've familiar with fixing VAG cars hence the preference.
I very nearly bought a 944 S2 but had difficulties with the practical and the fact parts (e.g. water pump) are soooo expensive on such a specialised car.
I wouldn't consider a CTR, I dont get on with the image or rev happy VTEC.

My parents have an A3 Quattro Sport 1.8T - Extremely dull car to drive, but ideal for them (i.e. 70+ year olds who want something reliable, small and capable of traversing the steep muddy back roads of wales).
Ah. Is the Cupra any more fun? I guess I've been spoilt by the Corrado.Tax as long as its pre Mar 2001 is £190 per yer (or thereabouts).
My 4Motion was horribly wallowy in standard trim. The Bilstein suspension (PSS9) and R32 antiroll bars have transformed it, now its great fun across country whilst still being pretty comfortable and refined. Not cheap at £1200 for the suspension before the antiroll bars but as the cars a keeper I'm not worried.

The R is 225 and the Cupra is 180, the Octavia engine with a 6 speed box IIRC!
The early R's had 210, standard cupra always had 180, later R's had 225 - all with 6-speed manual.I bought a Leon cupra 1.8T for a friend 2 weeks ago. It was a 2002, ONLY 37k on the clock. £3k. It was in black as well!
We spent a couple of weeks trawling, looking and driving the three you're considering. I put it to him like this:
Audi - Most presigitous, least fun to drive and lowest specced for your money
Golf - Compromise. Not as much fun as the Leon, better built, lower spec, more expensive
Leon - Best Value and most fun to drive, but doesn't have a German badge.
He agreed taht he rarely has peopel ask him what he drives, and has never used teh benefit of a car badge to pull a girl ever in his life. On that basis, he went for a Seat. It had lower miles, and was still cheaper to buy, than the equivalent Germans.
If you want ant specific info PM me. I have loads of details & info from the recent hunt.
