Seriously, WTF are we supposed to do??
Discussion
Mods, PLEASE dont move this around!!
It would seem that many people think that these blanket speed reductions are silly ideas.
Most people seem to look at a speed limit, think whether it is rediculous or not and either obey it or not. IMHO what it is going to result in is the majority of people thinking that all 20mph limits are stupid and hence break all of them, even when they are worth it. Outside schools, fine. But does it need to be 24/7?? In the states, they have 20mph limits outside schools at certain times of the day ONLY! This works really well in that people obey it as they know there will be kids around and it also works as the punishments for breaking these limits are more harsh than other speeding penalties (so I have been led to believe). Seriously WTF is the point of a 20mph limit outside a school at 3am in August in the Summer Holidays?!?!
And don't get me started on those goddam traffic lights on big motorway roundabouts. FFS at the Handy Cross roundabout or the Beaconsfield roundabout (both with the M40) - WTF are those about. I enjoy the days when the lights are out as the traffic does move through the roundabouts quicker (as proven at the Beaconsfield one a couple of weeks ago in rush hour).
Anyway, this comes back to the original question in the title - WTF are we supposed to do? It seems that noone pays attention of anything in particular. We can create as many petitions as we like and get loads of signatures on them, but nothing changes.
Is it even worth fighting this? Or would my effort be better off getting the part of my brain taken out that loves sniffing petrol as it is just gunna cause stress??
Joke.
All I can say is that god that for the most part I work from home at the moment - I dread the day I have to drive everyday in rush hour.
Cheers

I linked through from here to the Number 10 petition against lowering the NSL to 50mph. I didn't sign it.Even though I completely agree with the petition, I have seen the few petitions that have generated enough signatures to warrant a reply. These petitions simpy trot out the party line. This one would likely be "Speed kills [statistics], part of a wider strategy to cut deaths [statistics], will save x number of people each year" - essentially everything they are saying at the moment.
The point with petitioning the government should be that the petitioners have already thought about the reasons why the government want to introduce the policy and still disagree with it.
I was reading through the DoT consultation paper, and saw in the contents that there was a section entitled "Technology/Incentives". I thought great, this is going to be a bit more balanced and there may be some form of "carrot" for good behaviour on the roads. I had to laugh when the only item under this heading was a form of technology that automatically limits drivers speeds. Ludicrous.
On the actual issue of speed limits, I am not adverse to 20mph around schools and in very residential areas, with high penalties if ignored. I would, however, like to see that 'balanced out' somewhat with a raising of limits on safe roads (primarily motorways).

Why? Don't you think a thread about motoring should be in a forum about motoring?I feel that in the P&P this thread would have received the most replies and I am trying to be open and use TL as the new P&P

Reducing the speedlimit to 20mph around schools reduces the death rate by a certain percentage that is is less than 100%. Fencing off the road and building bridge or underpass would save nearer to 100%. But it's a lot more expensive than one sign.
See, even children's lives have a monetary value for the government. How callous is that?

I see a certain amount of New-Labour authoritarism creeping in to the Mods at PH these days, and it isn't pleasant
The forum is broken, we all know it's broken - but you'll still do it the party way!

I've moved this to General Gassing on the basis that it is a motoring discussion, and not a non-motoring one. No party line, no new labour authoritarianism, just good old fashioned keeping the forum discussions running smoothly and in the right place. Just like in Ted's day...
It's primarily a political discussion. Its only motoring aspect is 'is there any point in continuing to drive while these rsoles are in power?'Spiritual_Beggar said:
LMAO.
Didn't think I'd ever see 'Handy Cross' or 'Beaconsfield' turn up in a rant
I know what you mean though. What they have done at Handy Cross is a mess! Just total confusion now. There are some real idiots working for Town Planning Office.
It's better if you're coming southbound off the M40 down the A404.Didn't think I'd ever see 'Handy Cross' or 'Beaconsfield' turn up in a rant

Or if you're coming up the A404 to go up the M40 north, with the new slip road thing.
Can't say I've used it in any other direction but for me the new layout works better.
Though complaining about a Wycombe roundabout without mentioning that monstrosity at the bottom of the hill does seem a bit odd.
I've just read all the comments on the Times online and they are all against it except one. That makes an average of 2% as per the amount of comments (50). How can they say over half the country is in favour. Another tax that we can all see through but can do nothing about. Voting them out is coming but dont think for a moment the tories will remove it.
