Not sure about the Focus RS specifically, but most Turbocharged performance cars that have 98 Ron as a recommendation are 'mapped' to suit it. Most modern cars also have knock sensors, so if you are stuck with 95 the car will wind back the ignition (reducing performance) if it detects pinking or knock (which is caused by lower octane fuel).

It wont hurt it, but you shouldn't make a habit of it, and you should avoid caning it with 95 in the tank

Regular unleaded is 95.
Super unleaded is usualy 97
Tesco do a version of super unleaded that is 99 , its labelled at the pump as such
BP Ultimate is 97
Shell optimax, hmm not sure , I think its 98 ?

My TVR is tuned for 98, runs fine on 97 , better on 99. I wouldnt put 95 in it

In a modern motor you will have knock sensors and the ECU will re-tune the car to work with whatever you stick in it so it *should* run fine on 95.

Shell Optimax was 98, but it was replaced by V-Power which is 99.

Yes regular is 95, you need to use Super. If you dont use super, then you could cause detonation by the fuel exploding too quickly under boost and if it keeps happening has been proven to blow your engine to bits. If your car has a knock sensor then it can detect this and retard the ignition timing or lower the amount of boost, or both, resulting in less power and sluggish performance off boost.

Best fuels I have found for turbocharged cars is either Shell V-Power or Tesco Super 99.

Yes.

No, not on a modern car, but you will lose power (typically about 5%) and have small increase in fuel consumption.

Thats not true. Knock sensors do fail, and damage still can occur.

It probably won't cause damage, but if the engine is tuned to run on 97 and over you may lose performance when the ECU adjusts the igintion timing to compensate.

Stick V-Power in it.

Slightly off topic, but I was wondering to myself which is best out of the 99 Octane fuels- V Power or Tesco 99, so I had a look at the data sheets:
V-Power
Tesco 99

I seems to me that Tesco don't give "typicals" but their fuel may just edge it. One big difference is the amount of Sulphur in them- V-Power may well be advertised as being involved with Ferrari racing, but it certainly wouldn't be put anywhere near an engine with Nikasil bores!

used Optimax/vpower in my old Puma 1.7 for 2 years of hard use and it never caused and issue and that had Nikasil liners.

I could have been more clear there- what I meant was, given the choice of what you were putting in a Nikasil-lined race engine, you'd pick the one with the lower suplhur.

The Jungle juice that Tesco serves up 99 Ron is not only cheaper then the V-Power, but you get double club card points! Its Tesco every time for me ladies and gents. I'm so sad!

Personally I only use V-Power or Tesco Super Unleaded.

I think out of the two Tesco delivers better MPG
