The minute the sun comes out and the main artery to the south looks like getting busy, they scurry out with 2 billion cones and royally fk it for the next 6 months. And noone even has the decency to stick a sign up telling us what the hell they're playing at and why after so long, the south bound section of roadworks appears to for absolutely no reason at all.

Twats.

They've done the same to the A55, the main route in to North Wales..guaranteed miles (and miles) of queues in on Fri eve and out Sun eve...until (the year) 2010. Unclear why...did see 2 blokes in hi vis jackets chatting by a portaloo once but no sign of actual "work" though. The 40 mph limit scameras are doing good business I hear though so not all bad news.

There's a section of the M3 around junction 3 & 4 where last year they spent months replacing the fencing at the top of the bank. Finish that, remove cones. Just a couple of months later, cones back, replacing the drainage for the next few months! Why can't they co-ordinate these things FFS rolleyes

Used the A3/A31 this weekend & join back on the M3 at j10, nice drive and doesn't seem to take any longer either.

I haven't done it at peak times tho biggrin

Has this tread been mis-modded? Surely it should be in roads...

I thought this was going to be a rant about your BMW breaking down.

Yep, that's what I do. Just try to miss Guildford at rush hour and you're usually golden. Some lovely sweeping corners and a few fun roundabouts to be had on that route.

I just take the A5 when heading for Anglesey these days. Only a little longer (in time, not distance) and so much nicer. Roof down through the mountains. Wonderful...

Just a warning, I have seen Surrey Police stick their Scamera around Bentley on the A31 on the weekends.

This is the route I use when picking my son up from Epsom (every other weekend). Time wise it is very similar to using the M3.

It can be a bit 'sticky' around Guildford and Farnham on Friday afternoons though (but no worse than the M3).

The M4 between Swansea and Cardiff has been lined with a million cones for the best part of couple of years now and everytime i go along there i rarely see a highways agency/contractor/worker of any description doing anything other than moving cones a few inches here and there and changing where the speed cameras are.
Perhaps a system like planning permission for houses is needed where councils submit application to do work to roads and have to set out a precise plan as to what they are doing, a time scale and give road users the opportunity to tell them how to do the job properly and not bodge it for a few months only to come back and tear the road up again before it is done right.
