Surely wings are to create lift?

I was hoping to look at some pictures of over- sized aerodynamic aids tomorrow.

Cheers for ruining my plans.

Wings are to generate a force, upwards for an aircraft and downwards for cars.

Spoilers, as their name suggests are to 'spoil' airflow in order to reduce low pressure areas that may be causing a car to lift at speed.

According to the dictionary, it is a spoiler (on two counts - the first as it causes spoilage to the aesthetics of the vehicle tongue out )

dictionary definition of 'spoiler' said:
spoil·er n.

  • One who seizes spoils or booty.
  • Something that causes spoilage.
  • A long, narrow hinged plate on the upper surface of an airplane wing that reduces lift and increases drag when raised.
  • An air deflector mounted usually at the rear of an automobile to reduce lift at high speeds.
  • A candidate for office whose chances of winning are slight but who may get enough votes to prevent one of the leading candidates from winning.
  • A published piece of information that divulges a surprise, such as a plot twist in a movie.

Ah OK. Thought you could have been having a pop at cars with silly appendages on the bootlid.

Too obcscure for me - maybe another coffee would help...
