Hi guys, I am sharing a car ride tomorrow down to London from the north. We would like to share the driving. I am 21 and cant seem to find day insurance. This is what I have tried so far, am I missing anything?

- Swinton - Looks to be going well but cant get past 4th page of detail input. 'Not available right now'

- http://www.insuredaily.co.uk/ - the car is not listed

- https://www.tempcover.com/TempCover/tcvInfo.aspx need to be 23

- http://www.aviva.co.uk/short-term-car-insurance/ need to be 23

- DayCover.com again 24 minimum age

Can I make a suggestion, insure the car with any insurer and cancel within the 14 day cancellation period, assuming no claims. This is free! Get a quote and read the small print.

edited to say not quite free, you have to pay up front for say a month and get a refund.

Are the insurance companies not wise to this?

It's called a cooling off period. And yes they are, but that's the way it is.

get the cars owner to add you to their policy for the day or your insurer to add the other car to yours.

fairly minimal cost, I've done this on spec when travelling to look at cars I might buy - just means that if I do buy I can drive away even if the insurers are closed by the time I've done the deal.

Dayinsure's £10-a-day comprehensive policies are a thing of the past now then?

Due to the amount of fraudulent claims you will find 24hr Insurance unavailable on any vehicle above group 18,and exteremely difficult to find for anything below.Exceptions being commercial vehicles.hth.

Unfortunately it seems so, I'm looking for cheap insurance for a Mondeo for a day and it's £22 now!

They are wise to it but nothing they can do. All contracts like this by law have a 14 day window where you are allowed to cancel the contract with no penalties (minus your "time at risk" charge which is the month that you may need to pay)

There are some fatal flaws in this plan:

1) The vehicle will have dual insurance - not allowed.
2) There is no insurable interest for the second driver as he does not own the vehicle his mate (as far as I understand it) does. Any claim may involve mocking up a sales receipt (fraud) and then you have the problem that no money has changed hands for the purchase.

I appreciate that if you get stopped or have a minor accident you will more than likely be OK. However, if you are unlucky enough to have a major claim, the s*** will hit the fan.

Sorry to be a killjoy!

The last time I bought a car (last may) I tried to get day car insurance to test drive it, but I've found that all the companies that previously insured anyone 21+ have all upped the age limit to 23 or 24 in some cases. I'm not entirely sure why they've suddenly all done that. Can't you just have yourself added to the policy? Some insurance companies will add you for any period you want (so you should be able to do it for just a day in your case) but for others you may have to have yourself added permanently, then removed after and receive a partial refund.

This is taken from the FAQ on dayinsure

Can I insure a car which already has insurance in someone elses name
Yes, provided you are not insured under their policy

I was not talking about day insurance.

A previous poster suggested taking out a yearly policy and then cancelling after 14 days. My point about dual insurance stands.

Can't you just be added to the main drivers policy for one day? Would surely cost peanuts?
