China has a 200% import tax on foreign products is that correct?
I went to have a look at the Ferrari dealership in Shanghai last year and asked about prices, a F430 and F599 is approximately twice the cost to buy in China as they are in Europe.
Saying that, during the 6 months I was out there I did see 4 Ferrari's on the street, and a few Porsches.....so as with all major cities, there are people who have money to burn.
Something strange happens with tax also with Chinese home-made products....in that in the Shanghai area on the outskirts of the city there is an industry trade zone whereby home-made products go into here, then they are exported/imported (not sure which word is correct to use here), back from this trade zone back into the city (or distributed to other chinese cities) where they are sold with inflated prices.
I'm really not sure how it all works but when I was buying Chinese made I.T. goods I was expecting to see them at a fraction of the cost relative to the rest of the world..... basically because they are made there and in nearby cities.... so the only extra cost I was expecting was shipping if at all necessary. But most I.T. products were similar prices as to be found anywhere else in the world.

There is serious money in China.
The cars just around Yantai is unbelievable.
Range Rover Vouges, BMW X5, 200 series Land Cruisers, 120 series Prados, Escalades,
There is money here even with the high import tax

If a factory doesn't have a domestic sales License then it has to export what it makes locally (ie Hong Kong) and re-import the goods with a 27% import duty. If items to be assembled in China are bought in from Outside the country, thay have a very heavy Tax applied. If they are then exported, some of that tax is reimbursed (but not all)
If products are wholly produced and made in China, then less so. That's why you can buy a Bicycle or moped for about £20 / £100 respectively.
A lot of the IT / electronic components are bought from outside China (malaysia etc), so they have the taxes applied.
Also, Brands and products which originate outside China have a heavy tax levvy (Nike, Adidas etc) even if they are made within the country, unless they have been made under a special liscense. VW and now Cheverolet selling their 'Santana' range of cars for instance.
