i was watching red dwarf on you tube (don't know why as iv'e got most of the dvds) and came across robert llewellyns home page.

i never thought he would be so anti car or to put it another way so pro electric car.especially when you look at some of the programmes he presents ie

Hang on - isn't this the video where he rants about their treatment of the hydrogen car being incredibly stupid? I'm inclined to agree. That show annoyed me immensely. Going on about hydrogen as if it's some kind of magical fuel got on my tits. Hydrogen fuels cells are essentially just another type of battery.

has he actually thought that drivel through. why is it that people assume that car companies want their products price and desirability to be directly related to another product (oil).
lets be honest, if i was in charge at ford i would be begging the engineers to kill our reliance on oil and petrol / diesal. could you imagine the sales surge that they would have if they could give you a car to run that was as cheap if not cheaper than its fossil fuel equivalent, and the huge pr bonus. you might even get the yoghurt knitters endorsing the cars, and you would not have to watch sales fall every time some oil sheikh wants a new palace and ups the price etc.
why does anyone think this is a good business practice, surely they must see that the car companies would love to kick the petro chemical industry into touch.
and fine battery cars may be cheaper, but not all of us want to travel 200 miles and then wait 6 hours for the next 200, forgot to mention that didn't you kryten, it may cost £40 for a petrol or even hydrogen car, but they only take 10 minutes to fill for the next bit of travel. with a battery car my trip to scotland this year would have taken 24 hours, there, i would have lost a day travelling because of recharge times.
i would love for a new fuel / power source to come online, but its got to be practical, you can't condemn something then give someone an alternative that only gives them half what they had.
i am so disappointed he has done in his argument exactly what he criticises james may and jezza for, he leaves out the bits that don't suit his argument.

His point wasn't necessarily that battery cars are cheaper - just that it's impossible to compare at the moment because there isn't a mass market fuel cell car. There's no need for 'spittle-launching' rants like this because the ball is already rolling:
- The Prius V can run on its battery alone and odds-on the next iteration will come with a flex to plug it in at home so not all of the power is derived from the tank
- Plenty of independents (Tesla, Fisker etc.) are putting solutions out that aren't 'vaporware'
- The GM Volt is looking less like a hoax
- Loads of supporting products in the pipeline (Lotus Engineering genny for example)
This tech is no different to any other tech. Just sit back and wait for it all to unfold as it becomes commercially viable.

He does make several valid points. Coal powered cars aren't the way forward, and even if they were, with the way such technology improves, a year old car is going to be unsellable - and then the government will tax electricity, where supply is already questionable, which will in ten years time cost an absolute fortune even without such a drain on the system. All this on the back of the con of global warming.

Any prototype is expensive. The Jaguar X350 gasoline prototype was expensive- like millions. A Fiat grand Punto diesel prototype is expensive. So why is this fking idiot comparing this small volume non mainstream BMW with the more mainstream Tesla?
