basically im looking to get a track car, possibly an e36.
now i passed in 2007, now i have searched on hear and google, and got very confused with what i can tow, but im guessing this will be too heavy on my licence.
my car weighs 1272 kg , and a track car say 1200 + 500 for a trailer so around 1700 KG.
so i take it i have to do the test.
now what is involved in this?
how do i go about doing it?

You'll be able to tow the trailer empty without taking the test AIUI, just not with a track car on.
I'd check your car's manual if I were you, as I'm pretty sure that an E36 on a trailer will be well over your maximum towing weight.
I'll be towing mine with an E39 Touring, which can tow up to 2000kg, and I expect that to be marginal.

Remember its the Authroised mass of the car and trailor Dan, not the actual mass, so if you have a car with an authorised mass of 2000kg and a trailor with an authorised mass of 2000kg, you will be over the limit.I'd check your car's manual if I were you, as I'm pretty sure that an E36 on a trailer will be well over your maximum towing weight.

If the trailer is over 750kg you need a trailer test done, unless you past before april I think 1998

k all to do with driving with a trailer, same as a driving test, know someone who failed for not using there mirrors enough, yet scored 100%,
Basically its just manouvering with a trailer on, reverse parking etc

AFAIK the trailer shouldn't weigh more than 85% of the tow vehicle's weight.I did mine last year.

I found a driving instructor who did towing lessons, so I did one lesson, he said I was fine to do the test, then another hour immediately before the test (I had towed alot before though). As the test cost about £100 it seemed prudent to know what I was getting into beforehand. Also, things like wearing a hi viz when in the test centre, knowing exactly what the rules are for hitching/unhitching etc.
You need to use a box trailer for the test, I did it with a hired one & my own car, which the instructor arranged. Cost me about £300, as long as you can reverse (round corners) & remember to go slow & steady particularly through town, it's easy.
If you go to an HGV tuition company (who are all set up to do this commercially) then you will be looking at pushing 4 figures for a 3-4 day course in there vehicle.
If you drive an astra every day, you need to watch the manufacturer max towing weight as it might not be able to legally tow a heavy enough trailer to do the test. Towing an E36 with it (other than being legally a bit dodgy) would be somewhere between stupid & downright dangerous (IMO).

I can only find courses that are close to £1000. I've towed enough (below 750kg) to think that I won't need a 3-4 day course, but want to cross the Ts and dot the Is before going in for a test!
