Irony, got to love it

This is the last time I will praise something for being reliable, trouble free, a joy to own etc etc as I couldn't belive my luck yesterday morning.

I make the 2 hr trip from London to the parents in the saxo which I've owned for 3.5 years without incident. Dad is interested in how the car is so we have chat etc with me praising how reliable it has been. In the years I've owned it nothing has gone wrong, at all. I have serviced it and Mot'd it and that has been it, an absolute gem.

An hour later I get in the car to make a short trip to a mates and hear a big mechanical clunking noise, after inspection the drivers side suspenion shock has snapped clean in half!!!

Cue trip to nearby garage to strip and replace and a bill of £138......

This was the first time I've praised the car for being reliable ffs!!

I took the TVR to a small local garage to have the fuel lines checked, and then later asked them to look at the leads to investigate a misfire.

Instead of bending me over, they charged nothing at all.

Funny enough, my first thought was that too.

A mate once complained bitterly it cost him £140 odd quid to put four new tyres on his car....... I told him I'd be pleased to pay that for four tyres.

I was more annoyed at the timing rather than the amount, but also that citroen seem to have fitted springs that snap clean in half!!

But seriously, before now I have been suprised how reliable it has been, maybe it'll start falling to pieces now..

my first thought was why the OP didn't do it himself. £30 and half an hour's work at most that.

Half decent tyres on my Astra work out at £140 for 4. 195/65R15s. I was facing over £140 each for the tyres on my last car (255/35R18s)

Cars do break occasionally. If the biggest/only bill I had in over 3 years of ownership was £138 i'd be over the moon personally!

Mmmm, not really irony, it's bad luck.

Irony would be if you traded in your Saxo for, say, a new Golf, for fear of it breaking down as it gets old and the Golf breaking down on the way back from the dealership.

I enjoy driving, observing, owning, chatting about cars however I have no mechanical knowledge so am left with little choice but pay a garage, I also needed it sorted quickly as I was due to drive back that night, we didn't have the part, my parents wouldn't have had the tools or space eiher!

can you handle a spanner or socket wrench? job done. spring replacement is a bh. whole shock is a few nuts and bolts.

i also think you'd have had plenty of fair warning re: dodgy suspension/steering feel, at least some sense that something was amiss. shocks don't suddenly snap in half.
