When a car focused source doesn't seem to be able to tell its' a** from its' elbow? (did I use the correct "its" btw, found myself unsure here)

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/EDITORIAL/CARS/news/AU...

So here we have a write up about a "special" car on a car orientated website.

"And his old BMW M6 is one of the most highly-specced celebrity motors we’ve seen.

The monster Beemer comes with sat nav, Bluetooth, heated and electric memory leather seats, adaptive headlights, a head-up display, ‘Logic 7’ digital surround sound stereo, a seven-speed SMG semi-automatic gearbox and an M6 private number plate."

So not only does the list not seem to include anything another expensive car is unlikely to have, most if not all "options" listed come as fking standard on any BMW M6!

Anyone likely to be interested in a car like this, second hand, will undoubtedly be quite aware of the car's specs and capabilities, so why do the whole "car dealer" crap and hype up something that comes as standard? What next? mention that it has seatbelts and window washers? It really just discredits the website in my eyes, because I expect them to know at least as much and ideally more than I do about cars and not make themselves look like sensationalist amateurs.

"Its" when meaning the possessive does not contain an apostrophe.

When it denotes the short form of "It is", it looks like this - "It's".

The ones that really annoy me are ads for Rolls Royce or Bentley cars, and they read "All the usual extras, central locking, electric windows, automatic transmission, leather..." Like there was such a thing as a base model Arnage with wind up windows and manual transmission, and the original owner ticked all the options on a bloody great list.

Standard fit items are NOT optional extras, so don't describe a standard model as having "all the usual extras" when it has not one single option or extra on it whatsoever banghead

Auto trader isn't really car oriented, it is a sales site that sells cars, the special car is an editorial added to make auto trader look good and drum up interest from WAG types.

Evidently they do, because in pitching that car, they're pitching Autotrader as the place in which it's being advertised.

I daresay there're hundreds of people in the market for any given car who wouldn't have the first clue about what is standard fitment on a particular model, much less care.

Just because you know a model history inside out, don't assume everyone does.

Not really sure why it annoys you. What would you rather it said?

I would rather they actually listed the optional extras that it had perhaps... or talk about how good the car's equipment is as standard?

Don't get me wrong I am not being defensive or hostile, but and I do get it that this is primarily a car SALES website, but now that they have started doing revieing and news I would expect them to show a level of competence in their subject.

Also it is not just this article I mean, this is just the article that pushed me to voice my opinion, it happens a lot and not just with the autotrader of course

I once saw an advert for a (then almost new) 996 Turbo which read something like

"911 Turbo, 200 miles, Silver, Black Leather, 3rd brake light"

Superb hehe

You actually give it any credit to start with?

More fool you.

yes

Nothing wrong with saying what goodies the car is fitted with, just don't describe them as options/extras when they're not. If both seller and buyer don't actually know, fine, but if you don't know, why mention them specifically as extras/options? Just list what equipment the car's got on it, then it doesn't matter if it's standard or an optional extra that was specified when it was new.

Advertorials are a PIA and waste of space, yeah. Sales pitches dressed up (badly) as informative articles.

I take your point.

It probably had alloy wheels as well! wink

On a more important note, why would anyone (I assume beyond those that watch Jeremy Kyle) want a 'celebrity' car. What a load of cock..

Ford Mondeo. Now with Standard Optional Bi-Xenon headlights.

So are they standard or are they optional? One or the other. tts. And that's not even Autotrader...
