Interesting statistics.

I wonder how much more 'proof' the relevant bodies... need to

a) fix speed limiting software in cars
b) place even stricter controls on vehicle movements

Life is risk. 1 in 4 people get cancer - focus on where the biggest differences can be made.

This is clearly in the wrong forum and will be moved, but...

...I'm wondering why the hell the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine are doing research into car crashes?

The mortality rate in the UK is 100%.

Everyone loses a relative sooner or later. It seems misguided to deal with something that affects such a small group.

Trouble is, the people enforcing speed limits haven't exactly got what it takes to do anything about cancer.

They are saying that 1 in 100 are bereaved in 25 years.

This means 1 in 2500 per year.

They say that 3.69 people are 'bereaved' per death.

Therefore 1 in 9225 people per year die in RTA's

Has anyone ever worked out how much of people's lives are wasted by inappropriate speed limits and traffic calming, given the majority of RTA's don't have speed as a contributory factor.

And all the billions wasted in congestion , when you slow a substance down in a pipeline, it takes longer to go through, slowing the flow rate, so you get congestion.

Maybe like the 'Climate Change' Loonies getting found out, there should be a backlash against the setting by Lentilists of speed li,its which don't improve Road Safety one jot, but lead to a climate of Fear, which seems to be a Nu Labia weapon of choice.

Any mathematicians who might work out what proportion of a persons life is wasted by wrong speed limits?

And 99% aren't.

As long as there is risk associated with an activity then people will find ways of killing themselves doing it.

What a load of bks. The timescale includes times when the average number of deaths was more than double what it is now, despite having far less traffic on the road.

They reckon that for 1801 deaths there are 6467 close relatives, in which case given 2538 deaths on the roads last year there are 9113 bereaved relatives. That's 0.00015% or 1 in 6667 of the population. If that happens every year for the next 25 then that's 1 in 270.

So, far from perfect, but not 1 in 100.

Feel free to check my maths, I can't guarantee it.

Precisely. Last year 1 in 24,000 died in RTAs, but then that headline isn't as alarmist as the one here.

I disagree with a lot of the comments on this thread. Risk is not binary, it's a sliding scale, and driving a car on the road is, statistically, very risky. The report is very sobering, and should be used as a reason to improve road safety. What's totally wrong is that the government will just respond by pushing their "speed kills" campaign, rather than actually doing anything to curb dangerous driving.

I bet way more than 1% are distressed in bereavement about crappy treatment of their relatives in our often 3rd world hospital service.

Well, if you do 30 minutes each way every working day on a motorway at 70, when you could be doing 80, you waste 7.5 minutes every day. And over the course of a year that's 29 hours, so a full day of your life wasted.

Every year.

Do that for your full 40 year career and you spend 7 weeks of your life sat in your car unnecessarily.

Makes you think.
