a mate of mine has a decent rc nitro car that does about 45mph.
we want to see if it could get a speeding ticket by going through a gatso full blast. obviously this would be done in the early hours and with lookouts for safety.
what i need to know is will the car (approx 18 inches by 11) be large enough to trigger the radar inside the gatso.

I seem to remember a squirrel set one off once, sp it might well work. Me and my friend tried it with an aerobee once, it didn't work and got stuck in a tree, as did his shoe which he threw up after it to dislodge it. Followed by his other shoe...

Yes it works. Friend of mine has done it and had the BiB turn up on his doorstep telling him they knew it was him and not to do it again (witness reported his numberplate from being parked nearby).

The range of a Doppler microwave movement detector is related to the size and shape of the target. A detector that can detect a typical car at 100m will detect a train at perhaps five times that range and a man-target at a quarter (all figures for illustrative purposes only). But a bus viewed from one angle can present a target many times greater than a similar bus viewed from another angle all due to the nature of the reflective surface corners, plane faces, angles, etc. In short, the answer is that theoretically it might detect it but equally it might not. My experience over many years of making and marketing outdoor Doppler intrusion detectors shows that if a detector is mounted high enough above the ground it will avoid 'seeing' small animals because they fall outside the detector pattern when close enough to be 'seen', and when inside the pattern they're too far away.

It could work on the Truvelo cameras or others that work by wires in the road, you might have to add magnets to trigger it though. Unfortunately the Truvelo uses an infra red flash so no visible effects. biggrin

No they don't. Truvelo's have a regular flash behind a magenta filter. They are fking bright when you set one off (I was 200yds behind a car that set one off and could definitely see the flash with it's distinctive pinky flash).

With that in mind couldnt somthing be done to increse it's visability to the radar? If stealth stuff uses large flat sides, smooth edges and dark colouring would the inverse not be shiny and sharp edges. somthing like wrapping it in that prism style wrapping paper?

Do it, pack of custard needed though, tins are too bulky and not aero-dynamic enough.

Allegedly (sp?) if trying hard enough you can set one off on a pushbike.

How true this is I have no idea, but there is my two pence.

Made me think of:

Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These are very small... those are far away...
