My wife and I were driving into town mid morning today, came across a newish clio that had came off road and skidded about 30 ft into the field, thought id do my bit so turned round, 4x4 on and drove across verge to ask the lady if I could help, perhaps to tow her out, car looked undamaged.

Hi, are you ok, would you like me to try and pull you free, its no problem

"No, go away, im fine"

Its not a problem i said, I have a tow rope.

" I said go away, ive called the AA, thats what I pay for"

ok, bye

Now I could understand if it was dark, and my wife wasnt with me, but this was approx 10am, busy rd with lots of passing traffic.

Anyway, we went into town, came back past 3 hrs later to find the AA van sitting on verge watching a proper recovery truck pull her out, im guessing mr AA didnt fancy trying with his transit.

3hrs, im sorry but I just burst out laughing, wrong I know but serves the rude grumpy sad cow right.

This comes 2 weeks after I stopped to change a wheel in the pissing rain for a lady, she sat in the car for the whole 10 mins i took, talking on the phone, then never even said thanks and just and drove off.(middle of day on busy rd i should add)

Women, stuff em.

Probbably best left to AA, I wouldn't even offer to help in case you damage something.

Which is probably why people don't stop and help any more. You'll get abuse or shat on.

I'm with you OP. I would have given her a 'Well F--k you then, sit in the field. I'm only trying to help' as well.

I can have some sympathy for the woman in the Clio. After all, if she had just stuffed it through a hedge, then there's a good chance she wasn't exactly her normal self.

The woman who couldn't change her own tyre, on the other hand? Should've been left to rot. I don't understand why changing a wheel isn't part of the driving test.

Maybe she didn't hear the word 'free'.

Seriously though, you've done good by offering it's her loss.

Two occurances spring to mind -

When leaving the gym one night, walking toward my car in the multistory carpark next to it, I noticed some chap with a flat tyre on his KA, a jack in one hand and some kind of instruction manual in the other - clearly he didnt know how to change a tyre.

I walked over, asked if he wanted a hand, he gratefully accepted and tyre changed 10 minutes later - guy thanks me profusely and gets on his way.

Middle aged guy - nice chap.

A week or so later, I was driving down a dark country lane. Halfway down round a blind bend, there was a major accident, at least 4 cars all over the road. Paramedics and police just arriving. They told me to turn round and find another way round (no problem) so I did. As I was driving back up the road, I flashed a car driving toward it (to warn), the car slowed down and the middle aged woman opened her window when she got parrellel to me. I was about to start saying "Big accident down there, plod telling people to turn round" - I got as far as "Bi..." when she released a torrent of abuse about me being a for flashing her down, and her "husband will hear about this" confused

Middle aged woman - totally derranged.

Do I bother trying to warn people now? No as it is easily misinterpreted and mishandled by the derranged out there. Do I still help people? Yes. Even if they are rude, I hope that it will one day be noticed.

Except the AA charge for recovery when you've had an accident.

Thats a bit harsh!

When I was having probs with the Festa recently I had to fill the water up before I could drive off, easy peasy for me to do....

One night a chap did come and offer to help, I told him the prob and I was OK, but he really made my day.
Just a little bit of kindness from a stranger turned my week around. On my travels I've been helped/towed/fed/hugged by perfect strangers who didnt understand a jot of what I was saying.

People are always too busy/suspicious/selfish in this dammed country.

ETA: people are vile to me at work and all I'm trying to do is help them, so I appreciate it works both ways.

I'm a bit scared to offer help in this day and age to anyone unless they and I had others (like the wife) with me, or unless it's a true emergency of course when I pile in (cos I'm a RN and I have to else I can be held to be negligent).

Too much scope for nasty, selfish or nutty people causing trouble downstream in this hysterical age we live in.

Many dullards believe that once hooked up and pulled to the road, you suddenly turn into a pikey and keep driving. Oh yes, it does happen.

Reminds me of a criminal defence solicitor whose Jaguar broke down and a crim (unknown to sol)came along and offered to recover it for him and yes, he did steal it.

Its not all bad, i jump started a posh middle age womans 3 series coupe a few months back after she'd left her lights on.

Her husband was away and she seemed pretty scared, but tried her hardest to give me beer money, couldnt say thankyou enough and seemed pretty choked up as she left! See there are nice people in the world! (maybe she was just shocked that 6foot3 and 20 stone of bouncer looking shaved head bigmouth turned out to be a nice guy smile) And bmw drivers are meant to be 'orrible

Sat in our local small Chemist one day waiting for a prescription to be filled. 25-30 yr old girl bought something that was £10 and some odd change, she didn't have enough money only had the tenner. I offered to pay the extra 30p or whatever it was.
"I would never lower myself to accept money from a strange man" came spouting out of her mouth (by the way I ain't that strange). So I said "fair enough suit yourself" sat there for a couple more minutes while she was still rooting through her purse and bag, my prescription came and I got up to leave just as she was about to ask me for the money.
Some people are just weird.
