Where to Buy Numberplates

Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy numberplates ?
A Google search just brings up thousands of number plate sellers and a search on here didn't seem to get much further.
I assume Halfruads will do them if I go there.
Did find one company who would do them over the net but wanted £20 which sounds a bit steep......
And, in case anyone was wondering, I want completely legal and correctly spaced plates
Need to get some made up pronto as my private plate is now on retention and the form from the DVLA came through today.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought you had to prove ownership (v5) of vehcile before a plate would be made for you? (is this a legl requirement?)But knowing you, you'll want something cheaper ;-)

If it is, how do fancyplates get round this, as it seems you can just order anything you'd like.
I wanted 2 sets made up, a legal set, and a dodgy spacing set, and some mate of a ate in his bedroom quoted me something.
I can't remember what, but Halfords were cheaper, and quicker, butt he dodgy set had to be put through as a garage sign or something, not a number plate.
The funny thing was the dodgy set was 2-3 quid cheaper than the other...
