I have just worked out that my car is costing me (in insurance, depreciation, petrol, servicing e.t.c) approx 20% nerd of my take home pay annually.

This seems a bit much to me in these recessionary times frown and got me wondering what other people on PH are paying (as a proportion of take home income) for their motoring needs/wantsyum and what people would suggest as a sensible proportion to spend?

If car users really sat down and carefully calculated just how much their motoring costs, some would have a heart attack. It's always far more than they think.

Over the years, I've bought a number of new cars, with one exception, no part exchange involved and shopping round for best discounts... that way the new car depreciation factor has less impact.

However, my best and most enjoyable motoring has been achieved on a shoestring budget ~ some would call it bangernomics. Never been image or fashion conscious so an older tidy car often gives me more motoring pleasure and involves far less finacial impact than any new car I've ever had, be they my own or company cars.

Cars cost .... a lot.

I've no idea and don't even want to think about working out the percentage. But then I don't drink, smoke, do drugs or go out much any more and I've no desire to be a rich corpse wink

Couldn't have put it better myself... thumbup

I'll be surprised if it's much less than 50% though - my only vice... hehe

At this present moment in time my car is costing me more than I earn. Finance is a very stupid idea whilst in full time education

I drink (in moderation) at home - very rarely go down the pub - I smoke but haven't done drugs for a long time

When every bill is paid and I have food in the fridge and cash in my pocket I don't have a problem spending money I have on cars

Problems are when you spend money you haven't got

If I sat down and worked it out, it would probably scare me, but on the flip-side that feeling when you have the enjoyment of all gathering at something like a Sunday Service or Breakfast club makes it all worth it.

Everyone from a owner of a Ferrari F40 to an old MX5 gets that same buzz.

The way I see it, there are far worse things to spend your money on. smile

If you take into account insurance, road tax, petrol and repairs, maybe £150 a month for me at the moment.

Proportion of net pay?

Probably a little over 15% for the Elise.

I've got the bike now, too. That's a little cheaper to run.

Must be nigh on 30% for the pair of 'em all told. Expensive stuff!

Good to see you're still alive and kicking by the way, Quyen. Get yourself out on a run soon, we miss ya!

Sounds great, I've done over £200 in petrol alone since Christmas Eve.

20% of your net salary to run a Porsche 911 including all fuel and consumables yikes

That is really good going.

yes

I've done the spreadsheets in the past, and the numbers can get pretty scary quite quickly.

Let's just say it's an expensive hobby. I'm trying to cut down costs by abstaining from things like the "higher running cost TVRs". rolleyes

Maybe in a year or so; my baby TVR is fine at the moment - looks good, sounds good, goes quite well, but you always want something else eventually. Just got to try being content hehe

All in all, I must have spent pretty much 60%-70% of my money the last couple years on cars.

Over the past 3-4 years I think I've spent more than my total yearly income on cars.
This year however its got to stop, just starting my own business again , so need to be careful.
Although I need to buy a van/tow car. Oh well smile

I really don't want to work it out, because I know it could very easily keep up an Elise's monthly payment... You know, that elise that I could never afford...

oh God...worked it out as 30.2% That includes 1 service, fuel, tax, a tyre change, MOT and the price of the work it had done to it last year that I was unable to do myself.

To be honest a lot less than I thought...it just always seems that when the pocket is empty the car comes begging I guess.
