Why isn't the <insert your own car which you think, despite it being crap and really not worth mentioning, here> included?

M5 bigger icon simply because I know many many people who wouldn't know what a Lotus Carlton was. I know very few people who haven't heard of the M5.

Ok just for a bit of fun... No need to contribute reasons for you're choice as it'll only decend into a my dad's bigger than your dad's thread and be ruined.....

Just a simple vote.. Which car is more of an ICON???

No need to get int BHP, which handles better, safer, more reliable etc... as the answer will almost always be the more modern car....

JUST WHICH IS A BIGGER ICON??

Take it away chapshehe
Depends what you mean buy icon. The M5 was in production before the Carlton and after (well still is). So someone only 17 years old today will know about an M5 but possible never heard of the Carlton.

In addition the M5 is a full time mass scale production model on a global market. The Lotus Carlton was a limited run special edition of low numbers in a very small market.

So while the Lotus Carlton to many will be an easy winner, it will only be to those that know about it and what it is. To everyone else the M5 will have much greater notoriety.

I mean you could ask which more of an icon:

-A Corvette
-Or a Gordon Keeble?

Except that it went into production two years after BMW had released their second generation of M5!

Anyway, I love them both (except E60 M5) but E39 M5 would be my favourite of the lot.

a well kept carlton will hold its value better and they tend not to fall into the hands of people who skimp on upkeep, i think, in a straight line anyway the lotus may be faster, does anyone have an idea of the upkeep costs of the lotus?

Original so long as you over look all those 60's muscle cars, V12 Jags and many many other high powered saloons from decades before the Carlton? wink

Probably the Corvette (particularly the C3 IMHO)- but I guess a lot depends on your age, car knowledge, and geographical location.
